The American edition of this book was published two years after the English edition. It attempts to "Americanize" the original book, obstensibly to make it more palatable to the American audience. However, the editing was very lax and British slang appears throughout the book. In particular, the British slang term "naff" so permeates this book as to be off-putting. One doesn't mind that odd repetition of a slang phrase; however, this parituclar word is used over and over, ad naseum. Combine that with the many factual errors (that could have been corrected by a simple log-on to IMDB.com) rendeers the book less than enjoyable. ( )
Sinclair McKay’s new book is one of the very best attempts to take stock of the Bond films. It has its share of quirks, and is by no means appropriate for someone with a minimal interest in the series. But his analysis of the movies is smart and unexpected, and his grasp of Bond is obviously the result of thought and study.
The unlikely story of how Eon Productions-the owners of the Bond franchise-has kept James Bond at the top of the charts for forty-five years when originally only three or four films were planned. Through twenty-one films featuring three M's, two Q's, and six Bonds-from Sean Connery's career-transforming turn in 1962's Dr. No to Daniel Craig's debut in the 2006 blockbuster Casino Royale-the action superstar and perfect English gentleman reigns supreme.
