Flanagan selects 98 essential household items, large and small, and recommends specific types and brands, with current prices and sources. Some of her recommendations seem quite appropriate or even superior to standard items and practices; she highlights some products new to me which I found potentially useful. She prefers linen and microfiber (an interesting juxtaposition), values high-quality and expense where warranted and accepts cheap and easy where that's good enough; has bought the hype on CFL bulbs; and takes no positions on organizing papers or closets. However practical the book is in parts, her suggestions work best overall if you follow her own example: lose the spouse and kids, ditch their debris, and buy what you like to live alone with. Marvelous! A good, tightly edited (obviously), carefully reasoned list of the essentials for a home. And for once, such a thing is by an author who actually likes technology! I disagree with her, sometimes rather violently, on about ten things, but that still leaves 90% where I agree wholeheartedly. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

Purge the clutter. Outfit your home with care: The 34 essential kitchen tools. The 9 essential cleaning and fixing products. The 13, and only 13, things a bedroom needs to make it a haven of rest and privacy. Each item has been field-tested and rated for its environmental, social, and aesthetic impact. There is high-tech: the miraculous microfiber mop, the low voltage electric blanket, the truly responsive iron. And there is low-tech: the French press coffeemaker, the can opener, and the feather duster. Practical, entertaining, opinionated, Flanagan's Smart Home is a timely remedy for the age of excess. Above all, it's necessary. Behind the bath mat, soupspoon, sofa, and lamp lies a far deeper question: how to live. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |

It's not exactly a page-turner, but I liked reading this lady's thoughts about what kinds of things you should have. ( )
