The heart of this excellent work is the daily Luftwaffe claims listing for the entire night air war over Germany. These are in many instances reconciled with RAF losses. If this sounds a little too 'dry' and 'specialized' for you, let me just say that many of the major air battles are vividly illustrated with the night fighters' own translated combat accounts. The majority of these -along with Peter Spoden's eloquent and moving Foreword- were (dare I say it) expertly translated by myself, amounting to nearly 100 pages of text alone over the two volumes. Lengthy extracts from a number of previously unpublished pilot & crew memoirs also feature - Paul Zorner, Martin Drewes, Peter Spoden, Kurt Bundrock (NJG 1 BF) and Fritz Rumpelhardt (Schnaufer's radio operator/gunner) all contribute fascinating first-person accounts of the night air battles over the Reich. A couple of points that in themselves do not detract from the value of this work but are worth mentioning here. The page layout is messy; a combination of fonts, print sizes and columns appearing on different pages throughout the work. Picture selection is good but at times rather generic, courtesy of the publisher's own ww2images.com. Photographically the works on the Nachtjagd in their Deutsche Luftwaffe series by Dutch/German authors Stipdonk & Meyer (available via amazon.de) are far more comprehensive and could usefully be purchased to peruse in conjunction with this work. Recommended unreservedly and a work that am I proud to have been able to contribute to. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
The result of over twenty years of meticulous research, this two volume work will transform our knowledge of the Luftwaffe's battle to defend the cities of the Reich from night attack. It has previously been assumed that no detailed history of the night battles could ever be compiled because so much information had been lost at the end of the war, but Dr Boiten has succeeded where others failed. During his research Dr Boiten has analysed and cross referenced many sources, mostly unpublished, and some from private collections never seen by researchers before. For the first time the picture of each major raid has been compiled as seen from both the Luftwaffe and RAF view, each night's activity is detailed and each of the more than 6,000 night fighter claims listed. Importantly it has been possible to conclusively identify the victors and victims of the majority of combats, a thing previously considered impossible in all but a few cases. This has been made possible by accurately locating the crash sites of most of the fallen bombers through newly discovered Luftwaffe documents, again significantly improving on previously available material.
