This book is dedicated to my family and to my friends; one is my cause, the other, my conscience.

Like steam lifting off a cauldron of hot soup, morning fog rose above the Central Coast and dissipated over the Pacific.
Snugged against its shore, the town of Milford-Haven threw off its blanket of cloud cover and rolled out of bed. It was only six a.m., yet already residents were walking along the beach, watering flowers, or sipping their morning coffee, taking advantage of the few cool hours before the summer sun again heated the day to a simmering point.

To get anywhere in life we need both a compass and a conveyance. Cause is our propellant, the wind in our sails, the momentum we gather from encouragement, the sense we’re moving forward in a good way. Conscience is the guidance system that keeps us going in the right direction, even when we’re deep in the woods or far out to sea. Only some kind of false magnetism can spin the needle wrong, and that, we can get rid of by listening again to Cause as it blows away pride or prejudice. If cause is the wind in our sails, then conscience is our compass with its needle pointing true north.
