A rare achievement- this memoir is both brutally truthful and disturbingly awakening. Greenfeld has written a powerful and maddening book, pitting sentences that are a joy to read against a raw honesty that is almost impossible to accept. It is a work of philosophy as endurance contest. The story of his profoundly autistic younger brother, Noah, is a descent by degrees, the deterioration of a child who begins with all the ordinary promise of his big brother but then slides irrevocably to become a mute and sometimes violent and possibly insane adult. It is a heartbreaking story. ( ) Among the first adult books I ever read was Josh Greenfeld’s A Child Called Noah, about his son with very low-functioning autism. This was before autism became a household word, let alone the “epidemic” is allegedly is today. I followed the story through Greenfeld’s other two books about Noah, and I had wondered what happened to the half-Jewish, half-Japanese family and their severely handicapped son. Now Noah’s older brother Karl has stepped in to tell his brother’s story from a sibling’s point of view, and to finish the story out. Not surprisingly, Karl has a variety of confused emotions–guilt, jealousy, protectiveness, love and regret–regarding his brother. I appreciate Karl's honesty. It couldn't have been an easy book to write. And, in response to another reviewer's question: I believe the title refers both to Noah and Karl. They are both "boys alone". In many ways, a heart-breaking story of a family devastated by the diagnosis of low-level autism in the late 1960s and a brother's recollection of what it was like trying to live in an abnormal household. The most moving piece of the book is where the author writes the story as if there was a miracle cure for his brother's disease and for a brief few minutes you believe this has a happy ending. It doesn't. A far cry from my usual literary preference, but very much worth reading. I read this book because I work in the home healthcare field. I am always looking for new information and to learn from other peoples experiences. I greatly enjoyed the book, but agree with the other reviewers about the ending. At first I was angry with the author for dupping me. Later after giving the book more thought I can understand why he did it. We all have to come to terms with the way things happen in our lives, but sometimes we daydream and wish for a different ending. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
