"Still grieving the loss of her mother--and private tragedies of her own--Hope Westcott plays the part of a dutiful admiral's daughter. But longing for the love and acceptance she never felt at home, Hope plunges into Charles Towne society...and an illicit affair with Lord Falkland. For Captain Nathaniel Mason, wealth means security, so he is determined to build his shipping business--ignoring God's call on his life to become an impoverished pastor. He also ignores his attraction to the frivolous, vain Hope Westcott. Hope's adventure seeking lands her in the hands of an unscrupulous ship captain who wants to sell her to the highest bidder. When Nathaniel sees Hope on the auction block, will he listen to God and sacrifice his ship, cargo, and security to save her? From the Carolina Coast to the Caribbean, through stormy seas and shipwreck, can Hope and Nathaniel put aside their painful pasts, listen to God's voice, and find true love and acceptance?"--p. I had to force myself to sit down and continue reading this book, which is telling in itself. The two main characters both annoyed me virtually nonstop, each in their own charming ways.

Nathaniel, a self-professed man of God, was quicker to judge than any other character I've seen in a long time. He constantly decided he knew exactly what kind of a person Hope was and why, and made snap decisions regarding her based on those judgements. The poor girl received mixed messages from him that sometimes seemed to change from page to page, not even scene to scene. Once she professed to him that she was going to follow God and they declared their love for one another, he still turned against her the very next time he saw her, taking the word of a "friend" whom he knew to be a person who stretched the truth to meet his own ends and whom steadfastly refused to believe he needed to answer to God for any of his actions without question, not even bothering to ask Hope what had gone on between them. There were times toward the end of the novel where I was hoping that Hope would just tell Nathaniel (in a polite, Christian, and ladylike way, of course) just where he could go.

Hope had a very poor opinion of herself, for reasons that are unclear at the beginning of the novel (this perhaps would have been alleviated by reading the first book in the series first; but this was the novel I had available to me so I read it) but which gradually make more sense as the story continues. I suppose it wasn't her fault entirely that she constantly put herself down, as she was merely echoing the words and deeds of those around her, but honestly, I wished more than once that she'd show just an ounce of backbone where Nathaniel was concerned. Whatever his opinion of her was, she accepted without question, believing she didn't deserve any better. Ugh. She started showing more spunk with other characters throughout the novel, but not him. It made for a loooooong read. I really hope Tyndall's War of 1812 books are better, because I already have two of them waiting on my "to-read" list. ( )

Review: The Blue Enchantress by Tyndall, Marylu
5 STARS
Blue Enchantress is a fun christian romance book. It has slave trade, pirates and many more adventures. I would love to read more Marylu. I stayed up till 4 am and could not put book down.
Miss Hope Westcott found herself in the Caribbean on St. Kitts up for sale in a slave auction. Her fiance that she sneaked on board is ship to runaway with him. She found out that he was married and he denied knowing her. So the captain of the ship put her up for auction.
Nathaniel Mason was also from Charles Towne with his ship saw her up for auction and could not believe it. He was drawn to her but she would not have time for him. He could not leave her so he entered the bidding and after all his money was not enough he bid his ship and won. He only had two ships that he had built himself and was trying to have a fleet of his own.
Nathaniel made a deal with to work on Lady Devon, a different ship to pay their passage to Kingstown where he was to meet up with his other merchant ship. He would than see her safely back home to Charles Towne and her family.
Nathaniel lived a rough life is younger days than a revend raised him and taught him about Christ. His mother sold herself to men. Nathaniel vowed to save himself for marriage only. He put a lot of faith in Christ and was willing to share his love of the Savior. Praying for help with the problems that came up.
Also on board the Lady Devon were Mr. Gavin Kesse the second mate. Abigail Sheldon who was going to Kingstown after her missionary parents were killed to work with a friend their as a missionary too. Mrs and Mr. Hendrick and their little girl Elise. Captain Conway, Mr. Herbert Russel a business man, Major Harold Paine and other sailors.
Their is much action from the start of the slave auction it kept me wanting to find out what happens next. I was given this ebook to read in exchange of honest review. ( )

I have always thought that MaryLu Tyndall had enormous talent when it comes to writing adventurous stories, but The Blue Enchantress was fabulous on a whole other level! It was thrilling, captivating, and fascinating, and I simply could not turn the pages fast enough! Hope Westcott truly was a sassy enchantress, as the title implies, and Nathaniel Mason was a handsome gentleman that has been smitten with Hope for years. Their brief tale of adventure on the high seas, that turned into being shipwrecked on a deserted island, made this my favorite of all the Tyndall books I've read to date. I have no doubt that the final installment of this series, The Raven Saint, will be an excellent conclusion to the story of the Westcott family. ( )

We return to the coast of Charles Towne shortly after Faith is pardoned for piracy and wed to her Captain Waite only to discover that the middle Westcott sister, Hope, has stowed away on a boat for England to be with her lover, Lord Falkland. To her surprise the Lord Falkland has a Mrs. Falkland and Hope is set off at the next port to be sold on the auction block into slavery. An acquaintance from home, Mr. Mason, comes to her rescue, giving half of what he owns to buy her and take her back to her home.

This sets the stage for a trip through a hurricane, a ship wreck, and pirates with quite an odd moral code. While I found Hope to be a spoiled flirtatious brat, there was something endearing and vulnerable about her. Mr. Mason on the other hand is a self-righteous snot, and I didn't particularly care for him until Hope somehow worked her magic.

Once again, Tyndall has introduced not only memorable main characters, but a group of side characters that I fell in love with as well. The story was engaging and entertaining - a great follow up to The Red Siren. The story is once again a Christian tale, but avoids being overly preachy and just becomes another aspect of the story.

This has actually been a bit suspenseful at times. I had never read this author before and really like to stay away from historical fiction so it would seem I need to give a thumbs up on this one. It was enjoyable and I may have to go back and read the first book of the series. The characters were not as deep as I like them, but nevertheless, an enjoyable book. ( )
