Winnie loves worms and wants to start a worm farm. She knows that worms are great help and she really puts this into action to help other in her community with a small price of course. When she wants to win a worm contest she helps some adults when contest of thier own using the deeds that worms do. With her earnings she helps other and then buys her self a brand new wagon. This is a great story that shows team work and work ethnics, while teaching a thing or two about worms. ( )

While I am not very fond of earthworms myself (in the sense that I quite fine not touching them, thank you, but very grateful for the work they do in the soil) this book made it easy for me to identify with Winnie Finn, who does. I liked her creative way of getting involved in the fair, since it doesn't have an earthworm category. I did find it a little strange, however, that Mrs. Yamasaki-O'Sheridan was in stereotypical clothing that was a little off-putting. ( )

Winnie Finn loves worms, and she hopes that she can use her worms to win the county fair first prize money to get herself a brand new wagon. When she is told that worms do not qualify for the prize, she found an even better way to use her worms to get prize money for a new wagon. Winnie Finn had decided to help out Mr. Abernathy with his corn stalks, so they could grow very tall, Mr. Peasley with getting his pups' coats to shine and feel silky, smooth, and Mrs. Yamasaki-O'Sheridan's chickens to lay a large amount of eggs. Winnie Finn knew that she would need a seed crate from Mr. Abernathy, so she could create a worm farm that would help her retrieve the products that these three people desperately needed to help them win the contest. Once her worms created a great fertilizer for the corn stalks, she gave it to Mr. Abernathy. She asked him for some of his corn in return after the corn grew nice and tall. Winnie Finn then gave the corn to the chickens, so they could produce more eggs for Mrs. Yamasaki-O'Sheridan. In return, she asked for some eggs after there were crates and crates full of eggs. Winnie Finn then gave the eggs to Mr. Peasley to mix into the dog food that he feeds his puppies because this will help their coats shine and feel smooth. On the day of the fair, all three of these people won because of Winnie Finn. Winnie Finn received her prize money from all of them because of their agreement, and she was able to buy the finest wagon in town! Children should never be underestimated. Adults can learn from children, just like children can learn from adults. ( )

This is an adorable read-aloud book, especially appropriate for a science decomposers unit. Winnie Finn demonstrates the value of worms and worm bins for people who want to raise corn, chicken, and puppies. ( )
