"Flowers on My Grace" is a well researched and important book for anyone to read who wants to gain a deeper insight into the problem of child abuse in First Nations communities. A reporter for The Winnipeg Free Press, Teichreob's book reads less like a compelling work of nonfiction and more as a series of feature stories jaggedly arranged. The author's tenacity to conduct hundreds of interviews about this topic are impressive and she treats her subjects, especially Lester Desjarlais's sisters, with care and respect. I only wish the language was a bit more artful. ( ) geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
When Lester Desjarlais, a thirteen-year-old Ojibwa boy, took his own life in 1989, what began as a routine one-day inquiry into yet another native suicide grew into a lengthy, wide-ranging scrutiny of the child's community and the society that could not -- or would not -- save him. Flowers on My Grave is Ruth Teichroeb's unflinching, deeply moving testament to a young boy's life and a story that ultimately offers caring and hope for change.
