The Dog Who Insisted he Wasn't by Marilyn Singer (1976) Konrad is a dog who does not think he is a dog. One day, he runs away from his owners. A girl finds him and she can understand him when he talks and takes her home. Konrad acts like a person and goes to school with Abigail. Eventually all the dogs in town begin to talk to the children and go to school. After a while, the dogs become sick of being humans and decide to be dogs again and everybody is happy.

This book would be appropriate to read to children in the lower grades. This is a work of ficiton. It is an intermediate picture book. The pictures are black and white. This book could go along with a lesson on being yourself. ( )

This book is about a dog who has a good life but isn't happy because he is treated like a dog and doesn't think he is one. He runs away to a family that treats him like a human. He sleeps in the bed with the little girl and starts going to school with her. He causes other dogs to start coming to class but after some events he decides he would like to "pretend" to be a dog. He realized he actually enjoyed not going to school and getting to play in the park.

This book could teach children to just be themselves because they may have more fun that way anyways.

Konrad, a dog, did not believe that he was a dog. He ran away from home and found Abagail, a little girl. At Abagail's house, he was treated like a human. He went to school with Abagail one day and then all of the other dogs started to believe that they were humans too. They were treated like humans and had to do human things. After a while they did not like doing human things and wanted to do things the way they used to. Konrad asked Abagail if he pretended to be a dog again, if he could chew bones and do things dogs do. Abagail said yes so Konrad pretended to be a dog. ( )

The dog, Konrad, refused to believe that he was a dog. He ran away from home and got taken in by a little girl, Abigail. He told Abigail that he was not a dog. Abigail's parents let Konrad eat at the table and sleep and her bed. He even was allowed to go to school with her. Other dogs heard this, so they began telling their owners that they were not dogs and that they should be able to go to school also. When everyone brought their dog to school it was chaos. So the teacher has a plan for the owners of these dogs. They start having to eat all people food, that dogs don't like, they had to do math, and get bathed in the tub. The dogs did not like this so they told their owners that they really were dogs. Konrad asked Abigail if he pretended that he was a dog would he have to do math or eat oatmeal, and could he chew bones. She said yes, so Konrad pretended he was a dog. ( )

Konrad is convinced that he is not a dog. His owner starts treating him like a person. He eats at the table, sleeps in the bed and even starts going to school. When other dogs hear of this, they want to go to school as well. After time passes by the school gets annoyed with all the dogs so they start treating them like students by giving them tests. The dogs decide that it's much better to be a dog so they leave school. Konrad doesn't want to take the tests so he pretends to be dog, even though he really is. It's a cute story about believing in the impossible.
