This story is told side-by-side in both English and Spanish, and is about a little girl who gets to raise a monarch butterfly from caterpillar to butterfly for a school project. She learns from her grandfather that the butterflies migrate to his childhood home in Mexico each year, and Julia voices a desire to travel to Mexico and see her grandfather's home, and visit the butterflies. There is a small science aspect to the book, as it describes the general process that metamorphizes caterpillars into butterflies, and touches on their migratory patterns, but it also does a good job of connecting those same butterflies to Julia's culture and heritage. "Butterflies on Carmen Street" is a wonderful children's story, that goes through the experiences that the main character, Julianita, who learns about the life cycle of monarch butterflies. This book is great at introducing students to Spanish terms, and also providing students who have a better understanding of Spanish, a full translation of the text. One of its major bonuses, is that it allows the reader to understand a little bit of the main character's Mexican heritage, and how that factors into what terms they use, and what values they have. This book would be best used to inspire a writing assignment about the power of one's experience with nature (specifically with insects). ( )

The book is about a girl excited for butterfly day at school. Her grandpa shares his experience from back home in Mexico with butterflies. The book is about life and letting things go and one day you may see it again. I think that the book can be read to any grade in elementary and it would be great for a bilingual classroom. There are some vocabulary words that can be chosen if teaching a lesson about butterflies. ( )

This book is about a girl who's class learns about the life cycle of the butterfly. The pictures are unbelievably brilliant in color and help the text come to life.
