Story of the building of the Vimy Ridge war memorial - sorta. Along with that it is the story of a separated sister and brother and their lives apart until they come together again. This is my first Jane Urquhart novel and I will be definitely be reading more. ( )

A gold standard in Canadian novels that I loved from the opening sentence. Powerful and poetic. ( )

it took awhile for me to get into this novel, and I almost just put it aside......"it's not for me" pile. And I'm very glad I did not......this was an exciting book, full of surprises. Urquhart has a way of developing characters with true character..... it's what kept me reading until the last page. Engaging and exciting.....this,was a fun novel. Due to slow start, I only gave 3 stars.....the middle of the novel, I'd rate 4 stars. ( )

Not what I expected, and I think it's more that than anything that elicited a "meh" response from me. I was bored, and wanted more of the woman's perspective. Not bad, and I appreciate reading about this time period from a Canadian's point of view. ( )
