This book is good for our younger friends. The main message in this book is to surround yourself with positive friends. The diction of the book has a constant rhyming "Seven silent bears pad softly though the trees. One sniffs some honey and goes looking for bees" is an example on page 7. The book continues in this rhyming pattern. The book also has great images, all are very well detailed and colorful. Page 8 is showing a snow fight with all of the bears doing something different, almost looking realistic. This is a good book for first grade or maybe even kindergarten. ( )

In my opinion, this book is an excellent children’s book for many reasons. First, the language is very patterned and is a reinforcement of counting numbers up to ten. On every page, there are two numbers. The first number is how many bears are left total, and the second number, which is always ‘one’, is the number of bears that left or weren’t doing what the other bears were doing. For example, “Eight hungry bears go on a hunt for food. One wanders off when she smells something good!” Students that read this book will have a fun opportunity to read numbers rather than writing. I also like this aspect of the book because many teachers struggle to combine art into everyday classes, like math, so this book can be incorporated into the lesson. Second, the illustrations enhanced the story very well. For example, when the book says, “Seven silent bears pad softly through the trees. One sniffs some honey and goes looking for bees.” On those pages, there are seven bears illustrated that are in the forest, and we see one away from the group looking at the bees. Again, this reinforces counting numbers. The students see seven bears and can make inferences as to how many bears the sentence will contain. Finally, I believe that the plot is very engaging and suspenseful. As I read through each page, I noticed that the bears were leaving one by one. I wanted to know what was going to happen to the last bear that was eventually going to be alone. This makes younger students curious and excited to find out whether that last bear was reunited with the other bears. The message of this story would be to always stay near a trusted adult or peer. Getting lost can be very scary and overwhelming, so it is best to take precautions. ( )

Summary: One Bear Lost is about ten bears who do different activities and every time one more bear wonders off until its down to one bear. All the bear meet back up except for one lost bear. All the bear call out for the missing bear and then they all go back to the cave, all 10.

Personal Reactions: This book is adorable! It counts down from 10 to 1 and the bears are very cute. Little kids will love the adventures these bears go on.

Classroom ideas:
1. This would be a good book to introduce rhyming to children.
2. This book would help children understand how to take away and do subtraction. ( )
