I'm a big fan of the Doctor Who companion Bernice Summerfield, even if she never did appear on screen, and even if I am never anywhere near being up-to-date on her adventures. This book, released just in time for Bernice's 17th anniversary, covers everything you ever wanted to know about her history, all the way back to her first appearance in Love and War-- and earlier. It's incredibly comprehensive. Incredibly. The early parts of the book can be praised for serving as a guide to the making of The New Doctor Who Adventures if nothing else, not to mention the contemporary Doctor Who Magazine comics (which have yet to be collected by Panini). From there, it moves into the Big Finish years, steadily growing more and more details, partly thanks to the fact that Guerrier actually ran the Bernice Summerfield line for many years. I always find behind-the-scenes material fascinating, and I gobbled this book up when I ought to have been doing other work: everything you ever wanted to know is here, warts and all. Guerrier is thankfully not afraid to even make himself look a little asinine if events warrant it. It's also beautifully laid out. My only complaint is that Guerrier's tenure as producer sometimes makes it too detailed; do we really need email-by-email breakdowns of story development processes? But in the end, this book has left me quite eager to catch up on the years of Benny's adventures I'm behind. Judging by what's in here, I'm in for a wild ride... geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
