Edward Adams is Senior Lecturer in New Testament Studies at King's College London. He is the author of The Stars Will Fall from Heaven: 'Cosmic Catastrophe' in the New Testament and Its World and coeditor of Christianity at Corinth: The Quest for the Pauline Church.

Adams offers an extended argument against those who think that the early Christians met almost exclusively in homes. First, he minimizes and refutes the evidence for this. I didn't find many of these arguments convincing. Second, he provides evidence that other settings were used for gatherings of people in the ancient world, such as inns, gardens, watersides, barns, shops, etc. This is interesting information, some of which I have not seen elsewhere. Much of this lies in the realm of speculation, but these are plausible alternatives. Nevertheless, the most explicit, direct evidence we have is that the early Christians met in homes.… (meer)
