A good introduction to the subject although relatively limited in scope. However, it does provide the foundation suggested by the title, including plenty of material on tools to build an effective development environment.

Go for the O'Reilly Ajax Hacks Book. It's more fun, and there just isn't that much to learn that's really Ajax.
