Celebrity Death Match review vs M. Poppins.

‘You have to admit you’re a bit light weight aren’t you?

It’s going to take more than a spoonful of sugar to win this competition, you understand. I mean look at what Heart of Darkness is doing to Pooh and 1984 to Alice. You kiddy characters who think life’s all about honey and sweet things…we’re going to have to cook up something pretty good to take on the heavyweights here.

It’s a pity, of course, that we aren’t meeting in the final.’

Isabella and Mary were having tea and scones while discussing this rather miserable turn of events.

‘But we have to deal with how things are. We have to deal with reality. That’s what counts now. We aren’t in a pretend story where umbrellas can do magical things.

Look at you, for heaven’s sake. You are just a character. I’m a real person. Even your movie didn’t get made again and, well, it was so old-fashioned. Flat as a tack. My books are three-dimensional. You LIVE my books….they have taste and smell.

Face the facts, Mary. There is a natural order of things. You can’t beat a governess – you are just a nanny. But I can. I’m the one who wrote the book, after all.’

‘Yes, I see what you mean,’ Mary agrees.

‘So, you know what you have to do now?’

‘Yes,’ says Mary, ‘I think I do.’ She wipes her rather buttery fingers and opens up her umbrella. ‘Pop out? And not pop back in?’

‘You’re a team player, Mary. When I win, I will be winning for all of us.’

Mary only faintly catches this, she is drifting far, far away.

A Celebrity Deathmatch review. Mrs B vs War and Peace.

Me: They’ve announced the draw for the fight tonight. You’ve got Leo.

Mrs B: Tolstoy? That – that – that –

Me: Vegetarian?

Mrs B: Exactly. That vapid wimpy, let’s not be killing animals, I eat to live Russian borscht swiller. Well, pluck me dead and –

And, yes, saute some shallots gently in butter, add some white wine and –

Mrs B hastily collects herself. Ha. You know he hates the sight of blood. He won’t even turn up at the ring. Who do I get next?

So I've been keeping an eye out for owls when walking around Geneva as my eye was caught by one of the recipes in this book:

Owls, Simmered with Oysters.

I've never cooked owl before, but the combination was fascinating to consider, if perhaps a little too alliterative. Not to mention, if there is one way to make people take care what they give you for your birthday, this would be it, don't you think? That? Just a little something from that book you bought me. A bit of a hoot, don't you think?

However. I've just picked this up again and wondered why on earth the principal ingredient picture was of chooks not owls....

Whooooooooooops. It isn't a recipe for Owl and Oyster at all! The first letters have been done in fancy Victorian illustrated block style: it says Fowl and Oyster.

I'm uncertain as to whether to be relieved or disappointed. What about you, Manny?

Oh, I should mention if you never want to cook rabbit again, take a look at the rabbit pie recipe: it is faced by a page of the cutest little bunny wunnies ever to come out of a children's nursery book. Hilarious.

I read this last year, but have managed to hold on to the library copy till now. It's time to send it back. But I so enjoyed reading Isabella's ruminations that it goes on my wishlist to own, even though I'm drastically downsizing my collection.

She includes a recipe for 'Benevolent Soup' made to feed the poor.
She lauds the sheep for all it's services to mankind's comfort.

I love her.

A reprint by Marks & Spencer of Mrs Beeton's most popular recipes. This is a really pretty book with thick pages and glossy gold on the cover.
The recipes have been re-worked for the modern baker and include a few that Mrs Beeton likely didn't create at all, such as "Southern Pecan Pie" and "Texas Cornbread", but this book is full of traditional English and French desserts, biscuits and breads. There were many I'd never heard of, such as "Moggy" and "Anzacs", but the majority sound pretty great.
Mrs. Beeton was a 19th Century English journalist and cook who became famous with her 1861 book, Mrs. Beeton's Book of Household Management. This book would have benefited from a brief bio, but as it was meant for the British market, I suppose the publishers expected the reader to be familiar with Mrs Beeton in the way an American reader would know the names Fannie Farmer of Julia Child

This book, originally published as part of a longer work in 1861, is essentially a how-to guide for the middle-class housewife. If Martha Stewart, Peggy Post, and Alice Waters had a book baby 150 years ago, it would be The Campaign for Domestic Happiness.

When viewed as a historical document, this book is both interesting and humorous, with some advice that still applies today. However, if looked at as anything else, it is truly problematic. The work reinforces and reflects the societal and gender norms of the time.

There are sections on social etiquette for parties, for visiting friends and acquaintances, for how to dress and style oneself, meals, leisure time, how much to pay household servants, and how to keep a balanced account of monies spent. There are a number of recipes in the later half of the book, many of which include an average cost, as well as the seasonality of ingredients. I am curious to try cooking some of the dishes, to see if they are agreeable to a modern palate.

Overall, this is an interesting little book that functions as a window into life of the middle-class woman in the mid-1800s England.

I can't imagine working from most of these patterns. We are really spoiled by the quality of illustration that current needlework books have.

Crochet - I know that US and British terms are different, but these don't seem to match the British either.

Excellent combination of history textbook, language improvement textbook, cookbook and household management plan. Unfortunately, this edition has none of the delightful pictures the original had. Five stars nonetheless!

This is a facsimile edition, a copy of the original "Beeton's Book of Needlework" published in 1870 by Ward, Lock and Tyler. All the 600 illustrations and patterns are engravings, but they are very clear.

Although the cover states that it is "By Mrs Isabella Beeton, Author of the World Famous Book of Household Management", there is no evidence that she wrote this book; she had died in 1865. Then her publisher husband, Samuel Orchart Beeton, found himself in difficult financial circumstances and had to sell the rights to the Beeton name to another publisher and go to work for them. (He himself died in of tuberculosis in 1875.)

However the book is an excellent guide to the 'fancy work' fashionable among middle class ladies in the England of 1870. Here is a list of the contents:-

Odd book - not sure that Mrs Beeton had a lot to do with it as it includes tofu recipes! However it was a gift an looks useful! Of course I haven't read it cover to cover but have had a good look through (includes Mrs Beetons tips for microwaves!)

Interesting book. This edition is a facsimile reprint of the first edition, so the original line drawn illustrations are intact, and the recipies ahve not been modernized. I found the sections on economical meal planning and sample manus informative on Victorian foodways, as well as being quite useful even in a modern setting.

I can't imagine making a dish like 'mock turtle', which includes, among other things, ingredients like half a calf's head, or lark pie, but I love reading the recipes.
