Stephen R. Bown is the author of ten books on the history of exploration, science and ideas. His works have been published in many territories and translated into nine languages. He has won the BC Book Prize, the Alberta Book Award and the William Mills Prize for Polar Books, and his book Island of toon meer the Blue Foxes, for shortlisted for the RBC Taylor Prize. Born in Ottawa, he now live near Banff in the Canadian Rockies. toon minder

- Stephen R. Bown was born in Ottawa and studied history at the University of Alberta. He has long been interested in the history of science and exploration and is the author or co-author of numerous articles and several books, including Forgotten Highways: Wilderness Journeys Down the Historic Trails of the Canadian Rockies and the internationally acclaimed Scurvy: How a Surgeon, a Mariner and a Gentleman Solved the Greatest Medical Mystery of the Age of Sail. Bown lives in the Canadian Rockies with his wife and two young children.

Merchant Kings: When Companies Ruled the World,… door Stephen R. Bown
Merchant Kings is a compilation of biographies of six individuals and overviews of their companies. The book is well researched, and well written, although can become dry and drag at points in the later parts of the book. Given the title of the book I expected more information about the companies themselves, although a good information about them the main focus is on the founders and operators of said companies. Would recommend Merchant Kings as book kept out for light reading taking each section as its own separate piece.… (meer)
I've already read a lot about Cook and felt he was a bit shortchanged here, but as an introduction and overview of scurvy, it was an interesting and quick read
A great piece of history, well told. It open my eyes to an epic exploration that is hidden in the shadows here in North America. Now I know what Stellars Jay and Sea lion is all about too.
