A quality appraisal of Keith Holyoake has been a long time coming. This is a meticulously researched appraisal of his life, achievements and place in New Zealand history. My only criticism is that it is a bit too laudatory. Although criticisms are made and mentioned it would have been helpful to hear more comments from opposing politicians as well as more detail on problems caused by his conciliatory style e.g. some of the economic problems of the old Keynesian style of management which went unresolved. A good read for all New Zealand history and politics buffs.

A good book, well researched, detailed and readable. A good assessment of the man although as with Gustafson's Holyoake biography a little more critical analysis, and the impressions of those who were in opposition to him would have been valuable.
