The language of the dead : a World War II mystery door (Mystery writer) Stephen Kelly
Pretty standard mystery. Enjoyable setting, enough WWII detail to keep interest and set mood. Influence of the”Hamish” type character pretty obvious, but imitation sincerest form of flattery

cspiwak | Mar 6, 2024 | Hushed In Death features Inspector Lamb, along with his daughter Vera, as they work to solve the murder of a not-so-well-liked gardener at a hospital for recovering soldiers while their country is still in the midst of a war. Lamb is up against a large list of suspects and roadblocks of lies that will test his patience and his cunning detective skills.
I had previously read the first in this series featuring Inspector Lamb a couple of years ago when I checked it out from my local library and put the series on my must read list. I'm not sure this installment measured up to my enthusiasm of the first book, but it was still a great mystery read. The cast of characters were a nice blend of personalities and the setting of a rural English estate was well done. The mystery kept me guessing until the very end, which is always nice. My only real complaint was that it was a little slow in quite a bit of places. The ending chapters picked up the pace and the suspense, but there was quite a bit to plod through while getting there.
Overall, I didn't like this one as well as the first, but enough that I will look for future books in the series to see how they've progressed. A big thanks to the publisher, Pegasus, and NetGalley for the advanced copy of the book that was sent in exchange for an honest review.… (meer)

BookishHooker | 1 andere bespreking | Dec 16, 2019 | Inspector Lamb sets out to solve a murder. His daughter is a constable, serving as his driver, and helps the others with the investigation. The present murder seems connected to one the took place aboard a ship. The writing is weak. The sense of time and place lacks development. The character development is strong on most major characters but not quite to the level it needs to be on a few. I received an advance electronic galley from the publisher through NetGalley with the expectation of an honest review.… (meer)

thornton37814 | 1 andere bespreking | Oct 11, 2018 | This was my first read of the Inspector Lamb series and while it wasn't the best I've read of its genre, it was satisfactory. The impact of the war on the home front is set against local conspiracy, betrayal and the vulnerabilities of the characters.
