His daughter is a constable, serving as his driver, and helps the others with the investigation. The present murder seems connected to one the took place aboard a ship. The writing is weak. The sense of time and place lacks development. The character development is strong on most major characters but not quite to the level it needs to be on a few. I received an advance electronic galley from the publisher through NetGalley with the expectation of an honest review. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

I had previously read the first in this series featuring Inspector Lamb a couple of years ago when I checked it out from my local library and put the series on my must read list. I'm not sure this installment measured up to my enthusiasm of the first book, but it was still a great mystery read. The cast of characters were a nice blend of personalities and the setting of a rural English estate was well done. The mystery kept me guessing until the very end, which is always nice. My only real complaint was that it was a little slow in quite a bit of places. The ending chapters picked up the pace and the suspense, but there was quite a bit to plod through while getting there.
Overall, I didn't like this one as well as the first, but enough that I will look for future books in the series to see how they've progressed. A big thanks to the publisher, Pegasus, and NetGalley for the advanced copy of the book that was sent in exchange for an honest review. ( )
