I love how this book talks about different instruments and introduces what a duo and trio is when talking about more than one performer. They also identify woodwinds, brass, and percussion instruments.

This book is an introduction to musical instruments for younger children, and it's well done. The pictures are bright and active, the rhymes flow easily, and the onomatopoeias are fun to read out loud.½

This is a wonderfully illustrated book meant to teach how the various instruments come together to make a lovely sounding orchestra. Well worth the accolades!

When this book begins, the trombone is playing all by itself. But soon a trumpet makes a duet, a french horn a trio, and so on until the entire orchestra is assembled on stage. Written in elegant and rhythmic verse and illustrated with playful and flowing artwork, this unique counting book is the perfect introduction to musical groups.

A beautiful and lyrical book about the orchestra. The illustrations are worthy of the Caldecott honor. The descriptions of the instruments and their players were informative for children. It definitely captivated my students.

This book is a great introduction to musical instruments and terminology. I read it every year to my preschool Suzuki violin classes.

This book is about a young boy describing his relationship with music. He talks about music indicating special occasions or showing emotions. He briefly mentions the different types of music and names of classical composers. After he describes the purpose of music, the characters wonders what a life without music would be like and how much we would miss. This book describes the basic idea of music, and therefor, I would recommend this book for kindergarten to first grade. I think this could make for a fun read aloud, asking children where they find music in the real world or what kind of music they hear. The book also contains bright illustrations, and I like how the text is written in different fun patterns.½

This is a wonderful picture book for learning the concept of counting, new terms for musical instruments, and what an orchestra is. It flows with a rhythmic, rhyming chant, with each page swooping up or down, alluding to the cadence of music. The illustrations cover the page, a riot of color and sweeping, soft lines, also indicative of music sheets. An overall cute book and well done for the goal it is trying to accomplish. I can see why it is a Caldecott honor book.½

Very colorful book with lots of fun sounds from the instruments. Instructive for children who are learning different phrases to describe groups (sextet etc.) The animals woven into the panels are the comic relief.

This fun book introduces the instruments of an orchestra, one-by-one. The writing is absolutely lovely. The author’s use of rhymes, alliteration, and onomatopoeias make the writing sound like a song. I was very impressed that Lloyd Moss could make such a dry topic so interesting. Children will love to listen to this story and adults will enjoy the way the words fall off the tongue. This book could be enjoyed as early as Kindergarten.

This is a book that introduces the pieces of an Orchestra as they come onto stage. One is a Solo, two a duo, three a trio. Etc.. What a great way for students to see the connection between one person performing up to the Chamber 10. I would use this book as a read aloud to discuss counting and different ways of numbering, specifically within music. Genre: Picture Book/ Poetry

This starts out with a violin playing music on stage and as time goes on more instruments are added and playing. In the end it is a whole orchestra on stage playing for a crowd. When they are finished playing the crowd calls for an encore and so the musicians come back to preform.

This book starts off with one trombone playing solo. Then when you flip the page, a trumpet comes along to play. Now there a duo. Every time you flip a page, a new instrument is introduced. The author also tells you how many instruments are on stage, and what is the correct term for the number. The book gets all the way to ten instruments which is a chamber. I really liked that the illustration was brightly colors. Also, every page had a new instrument and that instrument was draw out for you. If a student didn’t know what an oboe or a bassoon looked like, they could look at the beautiful pictures and see. I really liked that I didn’t know what some of these instruments looked like an I didn’t have to make up in my head what they looked like.½

Summary: This book was told almost in a musical style, with bright colors, poetry and counting all included along with ten different instruments and how they sound when they are played.

Personal commentary / reflection: Similar to the Siesta book, I chose this one because musical themed books are a sub-genre I have rather shied away from in the past and I wanted to read something new. This is a great book for a young reader- it doesn't really have a traditional plot but it covers lots of different concepts like musical notes, colors, poetry and more. This would be perfect for a very young reader who likes music, or is maybe obsessed with one of mom or dad's musical instruments!

Poetry, music, counting, and brilliant colors guide, dance, blend, and sway their way across the pages as Moss introduces ten musical instruments and their sounds.

Summary: This book begins with just one instrument playing on stage. Each page brings a new instrument until the complete orchestra is constructed.

Personal reaction: I thought this was a good use of poetry in a children's story. This kids really enjoyed seeing which instrument was going to join next.

Classroom Extension Ideas:
1. Make different instruments in class.
2. Use the instruments to create an orchestra in class.

This books explores the different musical instruments through fun and creative illustrations. The students get to look at the trombone, trumpet, French horn, cello, violin, flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon and a harp. Not only does this focus on instruments but it also focuses on counting and exploring counting through solos for 1, due for 2, and trio for 3 and so on. This is a good informational book because it doesn't just teach one thing it teachers numbers and music. It also has good illustrations to go along with teaching students what a certain musical instrument is.

Zin Zin Zin a Violin teaches you what to call groups of musicians. They add new people with one new instrument on each page. The book makes you want to move and to play an instrument.
I liked this book because the author uses words like "Its breezy" which makes you feel what the instruments are playing. I chose this book because the author makes the sound come to life out of the book. I used to play the violin and piano.½

Zin! Zin! Zin! A Violin is a story about each part of an orchestra. Throughout the story, the reader gets introduced to the instruments. This book uses rhyme and tongue twisters to keep the story fun and upbeat. The way the words rhyme and go together require you to talk in a high, singing like tone. The pictures expand on the words. We see the instrument and the person playing it. Each page adds a new instrument to the mix as the orchestra gets ready to begin. Since each page adds a new instrument, the pages start to get crowded but it adds to the illusion of a big orchestra.
