A very well-written introduction to grammar. Of course, there are many competing theories.

This is a good textbook for a graduate/upper-level undergraduate class on syntax from a Government and Binding perspective. A strong point of the exposition is Radford's extensive use of diagnostic tricks to tease out syntactic distinctions. This makes things more empirically grounded and gives students good practice at analyzing linguistic phenomena.

Another textbook about the same syntactic framework is target="_top">Introduction to Government and Binding Theory by Liliane Haegeman. Haegeman covers more theoretical ground, though at the price of deemphasizing clever diagnostics.… (meer)
