This book is very simple and I think gets straight to the point. The book presents a chicken who is nothing like the rest of the coop. She is willing to take the risk and explore the cool, but knows she needs to find something to keep her warm. I think a great way to break this down for students is for them to follow their own paths and find what best interests them or helps them out instead of confining to what they rest of what everyone else is doing. Even at the end of the book when Minerva does find something to keep her warm, she is left with an extra piece of it and before finding out what she should do with it. I can break into a discussion with students to see what ideas they come up with before revealing what happens.

I love this picture book. It tells the story of a class' visit to their local public library. The illustrations give the impression that is an old book, but it is not. (It reminds me of my "Meg and Tim" early readers from first grade.) The multi-ethnic characters let you know that this is clearly a 21st century children's book. It is a very sweet book to read to preK children as they prepare for their first or 101st trip to the library.

This picture book introduces children to the adoption process. A beautiful family is complete when they adopt a baby girl, May, from China. A family is defined differently depending on the person's own depiction. This story would be great to read when discussing different images of families.

A simple and somewhat dated book on children's appreciation for the library. The pictures remind me of the Highlights Magazines of the seventies.

Adorable and cute, as always. Look for a cameo appearance by Harry Potter in this one.

I really liked this book. It was very cute and I would use it to read to my students during the month of October. In this book, the chicken loves when it becomes fall because the pumpkins arrive. As the chicken is watching, she begins to get confused. She sees the lemonade and thinks that it is water. She sees the candy corn and thinks that it is real corn. I would recommend this book to any Elementary school teacher.

I was baffled when a new kid joined my Bookaneers book club and declared, firmly, that they ONLY read books about tractors. Nothing else. So I went on a concerted hunt for farm-related books (side note - they changed their mind after I got them interested in some other titles).

I've always loved Janet Morgan Stoeke's simple but funny books and happily added her easy reader series, The Loopy-Coop Hens, back when they first came out. They've now been released in a more traditional easy reader format and I pulled a couple, including Snow Hens, to entice my reluctant farmophile.

In this intermediate easy reader, Midge, Pip, and Dot are making a snow hen. Or trying to anyways. When a disagreement arises over who is going to make the beak, Dot takes off to make her own creation while Midge and Pip fight over competing creations of a fox and a snow hen. Which one will Rooster Sam like the best? Meanwhile, Dot has come up with a snow sculpture that they can all appreciate!

The silly squabbles will make readers giggle while perhaps seeing their own sibling quarrels in the hens. Even grown-ups will have a chuckle over Pip's dramatic declarations about art. Stoeke's illustrations are simple but humorous; a quirk of an eyebrow or curve of a beak expresses a world of emotions. The font is bold but a little smaller than a pre-reader, suited to its intermediate level. Most of the text is placed on white backgrounds but a few are against barn walls or other colored backdrops. The one thing an early reader might find confusing is keeping the hens straight during their dialogue.

Verdict: Funny and relatable, this is a strong addition to any easy reader section.

Small children will gleefully crow as they spot all Minerva Louise's misunderstandings. ?áFor example, she looks up to the kitchen sink and sees the jar of scrub brushes, and considers them to be flowers. ?áBut in the end, as is apparently usual in this series, Minerva Louise's conclusion fits the truth just fine.

?áI just heard about these books almost two decades after they were published... I wouldn't mind reading more of them but I guess they're already 'old' by our library standards.

Shall we agree that Minerva Louise is cute, silly, charming, and, most of all, intrepid?  Little children will understand all that about her before they even know half those words.  Don't miss the last page, in which we're reminded that we have sheep to thank for our warm clothing that enables us to play in the snow.

A simple, humorous take on Christmas. Minerva isn't clued in on Christmas: the outdoor lights are fireflies, Santa's reindoor are goats with fancy horns, and the angel on the top of the tree is a white hen who's laid the most beautiful eggs. But she sure loves the present that Santa gives her!

This book wasn't a favorite of mine. It's about Minerva, a chicken worried about the colorful eggs she sees outside. She is worried that the eggs won't hatch without additional help. When she tries to retrieve the eggs, she sees the humans playing with the eggs for their egg hunt.

All the children have something special to bring to the bus stop. The bus itself is big & scary to them, but they learn to overcome it & wave to their parents as they are leaving. In the end, they look forward to riding the bus back to the bus stop.

I thought this book was very fun to read and that children would love it. Minerva Louise, a talking chicken, wants to play in the snow, but it is too cold. She adventures around the barn in search of clothing to keep her warm, specifically a hat. The first reason I liked this book is because it was silly. For example, Minerva Louise finds a garden hose and tries to wear it as a scarf and she finds a shoe and tries to wear it as a hat. She also goes outside and sees snow on a trash can and car and asks herself why everyone has a fluffy white hat but her, which children would think is very funny and cute. The second reason I liked this book is because Minerva Louise is an endearing and great character. She is adventurous and not afraid to do what she loves to do, even though her friends want to sleep in the barn and not explore with her. I think she is a good example for children and might make them think twice about watching T.V. as opposed to going outside to play after seeing how much fun Minerva Louise had exploring outside in the snow. The big idea of this book is that it is great to be independent and explore your own interests, even if it’s not what everyone else is doing. I think another theme could be making the most of what is presented to you, because Minerva Louise can’t find a true hat but is happy with mittens as a hat because it means she gets to play outside.

Summery:

This is a cute book about three chickens named Midge, Dot, & Pip. They are desperately wanting to fly like their leader Sam the rooster. They try try try but just can not figure it out so they decide to hide and watch Sam to copy how he does it. This is when they discovered their idolized leader was not actually flying at all he was just hopping to where he needed to be. The hens were disappointed but did not think any less of their beloved Rooster Sam.

Personal Reaction to the book:

I personally loved this book and so did my children. It was a simple book that taught a nice lesson about not giving up and working hard at something you want. It also touched on striving to succeed at a goal and also not judging someone by their inabilities.

Extension Ideas:
1. I would use this book to teach students about goals and how to work hard at the goals.
2. I would use this book to teach students about how to treat others and to not judge one another.
