Korte biografie
Ethel Talbot was born in Sutton Coldfield, England, and had at least nine siblings. Her parents Hugh Talbot and his wife Margaret Ellen Turrell, were members of the evangelical Plymouth Brethren, and the family moved frequently. Little is known of her early years or her education. As an adult, she settled in Edinburgh, Scotland, where she shared a house for a few years with her friend and fellow writer E.M. (Ethel Mary) de Foubert. She was a prolific author of girls' school stories from 1919 to her death in 1944, with books that included The School on the Moor (1919), Betty at St. Benedick's (1924), The School at None-Go-By (1926), Schoolgirl Rose (1928), The Mascot of the School (1934), and The Warringtons in War-Time (1940).

One of the preachiest books I’ve ever read. Phoebe goes to boarding school for the first time at 15 to please her father but determined not to like it. She scoffs at school spirit and gets everyone off-side, so by the time she realises she actually wants to be there and that school spirit isn’t all ‘fluff’, none of the other girls want her to stay. How will she redeem herself!!?

There is lots of talk about modern vs old fashioned, so I assume that was a big issue in the 1930s. Also standing out vs ‘following on’.

The conversations are oddly stilted, with a million ellipses: “It meant...all the girls who had gone before, and...all the ones who were coming on, and...us, in between, and...the Manor, always there.” (p168)

Overall, far too much repetitive introspection and too little action/conversation/relationships.

Another of Talbot's books where girls have to survive with very little money. This one gives them a couple of relatives but one is conveniently distant and the other is a pathetically helpless artistic sort. With a crumbling old house and twin boys for them to cope with on top of their own work! Very readable, definitely focused around the home and family rather than school.

Definitely one of Talbot's books for younger girls with a very predictable re-used storyline and younger heroines.

Very similar to Gerda Gets There and Diana the Daring! Still enjoyable though.
