- Ethel Talbot was born in Sutton Coldfield, England, and had at least nine siblings. Her parents Hugh Talbot and his wife Margaret Ellen Turrell, were members of the evangelical Plymouth Brethren, and the family moved frequently. Little is known of her early years or her education. As an adult, she settled in Edinburgh, Scotland, where she shared a house for a few years with her friend and fellow writer E.M. (Ethel Mary) de Foubert. She was a prolific author of girls' school stories from 1919 to her death in 1944, with books that included The School on the Moor (1919), Betty at St. Benedick's (1924), The School at None-Go-By (1926), Schoolgirl Rose (1928), The Mascot of the School (1934), and The Warringtons in War-Time (1940).

There is lots of talk about modern vs old fashioned, so I assume that was a big issue in the 1930s. Also standing out vs ‘following on’.
The conversations are oddly stilted, with a million ellipses: “It meant...all the girls who had gone before, and...all the ones who were coming on, and...us, in between, and...the Manor, always there.” (p168)
Overall, far too much repetitive introspection and too little action/conversation/relationships.… (meer)
