Not a bad book for a museum to produce. If you liked the exhibit, dig a little deeper at home. However, the intro and foreword lead you to believe that what you have in your hands is an historical work of massive import. That's more than slightly ridiculous. Also? That poem about contemporary London bodies at the end? Kill it! Kill it with fire!

I love reading and learning about Victorian London so when I read about this book in the Guardian I decided I had to buy it!
It's chock full of great photographs of London all taken during the lifetime of Charles Dickens. It's a great coffee table style book that I will always treasure.

Like many Sherlockians, I own a few companions and scrapbooks on the subject of the great sleuth. So, I can say with some confidence that this is one of the better ones. However, this is perhaps understating the matter greatly. Because, in my opinion it would take something rather exceptional to best this book; but, as I have not seen them all this is as much as I can say without undermining your confidence in this review.

Such high praise is probably fitting when you consider that this book was produced to accompany the Museum of London's Sherlock Holmes exhibition.

The book is packed with over 200 full colour and vintage black and white photographs, illustrations and maps. There is also a facsimile of the original 8 page article from Strand magazine published 1892 'A Day With Conan Doyle'.
This book is a treasure trove for all Sherlocked individuals!

I knew that this book wasn’t about the murders or the investigation of Jack the Ripper when I purchased it, but what I didn’t know is that it would be a compilation of mostly dry academic essays and sometimes boring statics about the communal settings of London’s East End of yesteryear either. I suppose I was expecting something more sensational and this is why I’m a bit disappointed. Still it has some useful information for educational purposes and the photos are excellent, even if not all of them were taken during the era of the homicides.… (meer)
