Don't you just mean Brutus?
14rolandperkins
"Don't you just mean Brutus?"
Well, Shakespeare calls him just "Brutus", or "Marcus Brutus". The apparently "middle" name "Junius" is
called (confusingly) a "gentile" name by classicists; it is a sort of extended-family- or clan-name, while "Brutus" (meaning "ugly"(!)) was the name of the immediate family. He was adopted and the names of his birth parents are unknown Many Roman family names were originally nicknames; e.g. "Caesar" meant "Hair", "Cicero" meant "chick pea", "Catullus" meant "Cubby".
The other Brutus in the play is called (incorrectly) "Decius" Brutus. He's the one who persuades Caesar to attend the senate meeting at which he will be assassinated.
Real name: Decimus Junius Brutus.

I know so little about cricket that I'm not sure of the differences from baseball. I think there are paralells between baseball and cricket, rather than elements that make cricket the origin of
baseball. Most historians believe that baseball is derived from a game called "rounders" played in England, Ireland, and elsewhere in Europe -- much simpler than
cricket. The outs in rounders are achieved by hitting a baserunner with the ball;* I'm sure this isn't done in cricket.
In baseball's early years, (19th c.) the pitchers didn't really expect to get the batter out;
they depended on the fielders for that. So strategy of that era may have been influenced by cricket.
*An episode in Heinrich Boll's "Billard am halb Zehn"
recalls a rounders game of the pre-Nazi period, in which both teams had some
aspiring Nazis and some anti-Nazi players. The Nazi members of the batting team conspired with the Nazis on the Opposition, so that an
anti-Nazi baserunner would
get bashed with the ball.

Willem Adriaan van der Stel, arguably the worst governor the Cape had in the VOC period. However his private estate at Vergelegen still exists as both a national monument and a first-class wine producer. From the entrance to the wine cellar, his unfair advantage over the independent farmers in the area (which, together with his dictatorial style, lost him his job) is all too obvious. The Diary of Adam Tas, one of the key pieces of evidence at his trial, has been translated into English and been reprinted once or twice. (When Tas was released from imprisonment he changed the name of his farm to Libertas, a truly Dragonish pun, and a name it still bears 300 years later, and you can still buy a wine called Chateau Libertas.

Is " Duke of Somerset" a name, it is more like a title bestowed on the person?
212rolandperkins
"Is ʻDuke of Somersetʻ a name?
Yes, the nobility title (in this case "Somerset") is used as a surname. Similar to the case of Benjamin Disraeli who had the family surname "Disraeli" and the nobility surname "Beaconsfield". Even the Duke of Wellington had a bestowed title, but still is usually referred to as "Wellington" not "Wellesley", his family surname.
What surprised me in reading in Wikipedia about Seymour/Somerset was that it implied that (in the 16th century at least) an earl was higher than a duke, saying he was
"advanced" to an earldom.

Financier, politician; he ran for president in 1992 against incumbent George H. W. Bush (R, TX) and eventual winner Bill Clinton. A few Conservatives blame him for
"throwing the election* to Clinton".
# Usually known as just "Ross Perot" or "H. Ross Perot".
*i. e. in the style of Ralph Naderʻs unfortunate candidacy in 2000, (which ended with Al Gore (D, TN) winning the popular vote, but George W. Bush (R, TX) winning the electoral college, Perot having, supposedly, thrown the election to Bush. Iʻm not a believer in either the "Perot Effect" or the "Nader Effect".
