One of the best things about living in Birmingham and JeffCo (IMHO) is the excellent library system with its generous number of local branches — and not badly stocked local branches, either.

There are a number of events at the libraries that would benefit from some LT publicity, especially at the downtown branch. Would this be a good project for members of this group?

The library system is under strain due to the county budget crisis, and that’s not likely to change soon. Publicizing the library’s offerings on LT is one small way we can help out.

I’m volunteering, but the effort will be more reliable if more than one of us agrees to help out. The library website is jclc.org and the events calendar is at: http://www.eventkeeper.com/code/events.cfm?curOrg=JCLC

I think this is a great idea and can do nothing but echo your sentiments for the JCLC system and folks their. I think we have a good many of the libraries listed under the Local section here on LT, I've been trying to keep up with author events there.

Do you think we should add more than that? I'm all for helping the library in any way possible.

I've added several events for November and December, including some at Avondale, Powderly (a jazz evening), and Springville.

Very cool! Thanks for taking the time. Hopefully it will help spread the word of the events going on.

Worth mentioning: Posting local events earns you a discreet little medal and some service points on your profile. Nothing flashy. I like LT's low-key style with things like this: recognizing volunteerism without inciting competition for status.

I personally can't wait until the grand re-opening of the Vestavia Hills library at its new location on December 12.

I didn’t know about that. Where?

US 31 at Round Hill Road. I visited once, when weather conditions didn't make the outdoor spaces inviting, but did enjoy flipping through some newspapers in front of the gas-burning fireplace.

Why is there a gas-burning fireplace in a "green" building? Not sure. Architecturally, the space is pleasant and interesting to look at. I can't help getting the feeling, though, that every time Vestavia moves its library it sheds more books. Or maybe I've just gotten bigger since I would wait there for mom to pick me up from elementary school.

Definitely go check it out. Go on a nice day and walk around in the woods if you can. Pay no attention to the fact that the neighborhood sidewalks that VH spent so much federal money installing don't actually bring you to the door, forcing you to brave your way through the parking lot. On the plus side, if you drive a low-emissions vehicle, there's a special parking space reserved for you.
