Catullus, who lived during some of the most interesting and tumultuous years of the late Roman Republic, spent his short but intense life (?84-54 B.C.E.) in high Roman society, rubbing shoulders with various cultural and political luminaries, including Caesar, Cicero, and Pompey. Catullus's poetry is by turns ribald, lyric, romantic, satirical; sometimes obscene and always intelligent, it offers us vivid pictures of the poet's friends, enemies, and lovers. The verses to his friends are bitchy, funny, and affectionate; those to his enemies are often wonderfully nasty. Many poems brilliantly evoke his passionate affair with Lesbia, often identified as Clodia Metelli, a femme fatale ten years his senior and the smart, adulterous wife of an arrogant aristocrat. Cicero later claimed she poisoned her husband. This new bilingual translation of Catullus's surviving poems by Peter Green is fresh, bawdy, and utterly engaging. Unlike its predecessors, it adheres to the principle that the rhythm of a poem, whether familiar or not, is among the most crucial elements for its full appreciation. Green provides an essay on the poet's life and literary background, a historical sketch of the politically fraught late Roman Republic in which Catullus lived, copious notes on the poems, a wide-ranging bibliography for further reading, and a full glossary.

Catullus life was akin to pulp fiction. In Julius Caesar s Rome, he engages in a stormy affair with a consul s wife. He writes her passionate poems of love, hate, and jealousy. The consul, a vehement opponent of Caesar, dies under suspicious circumstances. The merry widow romances numerous young men. Catullus is drawn into politics and becomes a cocky critic of Caesar, writing poems that dub Julius a low-life pig and a pervert. Not surprisingly, soon after, no more is heard of Catullus. David Mulroy brings to life the witty, poignant, and brutally direct voice of a flesh-and-blood man, a young provincial in the Eternal City, reacting to real people and events in a Rome full of violent conflict among individuals marked by genius and megalomaniacal passions. Mulroy s lively, rhythmic translations of the poems are enhanced by an introduction and commentary that provide biographical and bibliographical information about Catullus, a history of his times, a discussion of the translations, and definitions and notes that ease the way for anyone who is not a Latin scholar."

Gaius Valerius Catullus (c. 84-54 BCE), one of the finest lyrical poets of classical times, was also among the bawdiest. He was capable of producing poems of such forthright and ribald sensuality that until recently they were all too often relegated to collections of erotica to protect the innocent minds of impressionable students. This collection of Catullus' poems incorporates the original Latin text and a facing English translation by James Michie, which is contemporary and lively, matching the spirit of the original, and also reveals the poets as he really was: a worldly, lusty man writing for his turbulent age.

This edition of Catullus was first published in 1970 in the long lived 'red Macmillan' series, and it has remained the standard edition of the complete (unbowdlerised) poems for use by upper school and university students. It caters for a wide range of needs, some of the annotations being on deeper points of poetic content. Quinn sees it as his main purpose to interpret each pome as a strucxtural and poetic whole for the attentive and responsive reader. To the commentary on each poem is added a bibliography of interpretive articles.

"A translation that successfully re-creates in English the wit, the lyric, exaltation, the playful banter, the despair, the scurrilous invective, and the dramatic flair of the original, all of it moving easily in artfully contrived and skillfully controlled English equivalents of Catullus' many and varied meters."--BernardKnox, New York Review of Books.

Presented alongside the original Latin text, this new translation reflects Catullus' mastery of poetic forms as diverse as the lyric, the inventive epigram, and the romantic legend, and shows his passionate, and sometimes dedicated to his lover Lesbia. One of the most versatile of Roman poets, Catullus wrote verse of an almost unparalleled diversity and stylistic agility, from the brevity of the epigram to the sustained elegance of the elegy. This collection contains all of Catullus' extant work and includes his lyrics to the notorious Clodia Metelli - married, seductive and corrupt - charting the course from rapturous delight in a new affair to the torment of love gone sour; poems to his young friend Iuventius; and longer verse, such as the extraordinary tale of Attis, a Greek youth who castrates himself in a fit of religious ecstasy. Ranging from the tender, moving and passionate to the vicious and even obscene, these are poems of astonishingly modern force and content.

Written in the twilight of the Roman Republic, the poetry of Gaius Valerius Catullus offers a delicious insight into the passions and gossip of high Roman society. From the poet and his friends to cultural and political titans, including Caesar, Cicero, and Pompey, his cutting, modern verse spares no-one. In this new translation by Daisy Dunn, author of Catullus' Bedspread, his obscene honesty, arrogant wit and surprising tenderness capture Roman society at their best. Most famous for his obsessive love lyrics for the married Lesbia, Catullus' words are an immortal expression of youth, rebellion and agonised love.

This work contains a major revision of Douglas Thomson's Catullus: A Critical Edition (1978), with the addition of a full commentary and a wholly new introduction. For the introduction and for each of the poems there is an extensive and current bibliography. In the introduction, apart from sections on the life of Catullus, on the arrangement of the poems, and on their literary background, there is a lengthy discussion of the history of the text, as well as a review of the progress of Catullan studies from the editio princeps to the present day. There are about seventy changes from the previous edition in the text of the poems. The critical apparatus has also been extensively revised. In addition, the Table of Manuscripts, which has come to be regarded as standard, has been updated without alteration to the numbering sequence. Though this is not primarily intended as a 'school edition,' the commentary includes, in addition to critical judgments, translations and interpretations of words and phrases that may help to illuminate readings in the text. Catullus offers readers a new text of the poems, with a commentary, a codicology of the manuscript tradition, and a thorough review of Catullus scholarship.

Rom Harré has pushed the boundaries of our thinking about people and societies and has challenged the orthodox philosophy of science and social psychology. His countless books and articles have inspired generations of scholars in philosophy, psychology, linguistics, cognitive science and social theory. The diversity of his work makes that some see him as a leading figure in the critical realist school of philosophy of science, other as a key player in developing a social constructionist approach to psychology. The present volume brings together a careful selection of his key writings and presents them in a framework that stresses the evolution of his thinking as well as the place of his thinking in ongoing debates in different disciplines. The overall theme is the study of people and their ways of life. This is the first book that gives readers a systematic introduction in the conceptual universe of this towering figure.

In these splendid verse translations, Charles Martin makes newly accessible the work of one of ancient Rome's most widely read and exciting poets. It is the life and language of Roman streets that gives this poetry its force and lasting appeal. Catullus is a master of passing on the latest, most vicious gossip. No blow is too low to aim at an enemy, not even the sort scratched on walls about people like "Rufa, the Bolognese wife of Menenius," whose scandalous acts in a "cheap graveyard" live on long after her. But the poet's range of experience is not limited to Roman streets. He knows of life inside Roman villas as well (including Julius Caesar's, where he was a dinner guest). And behind the boastful exaggerations there is often a serious purpose. Catullus sees himself as a morality, reminding others of what constitutes proper behavior. He is also a student of literature, and his love poems can pair moral pietites with pungent obscenities or set ancient Greek literary clichés alongside jarring, "modern" metaphors from the world of Roman high finance. Charles Martin's translation skillfully conveys the tones and rhythms of the Latin verse while never straying far from its original meaning.

It was probably intended as a preface to some only of the poems. 1. dorw, "am I giving?" more vivid than "am I to give?" though the latter is of course possible; cf. the well-known in qua te quaero proseucha? Onme aevum, i.e. the Chronica of Nepos, a history of all time. 8. laboriosis, "full of research." 9. quidquid hoc libelli, qualecunque. Self-depreciatory; "whatever its worth, whatever its kind." 10. patrona virgo, Le. the Muse. The sudden invocation is not unnatural. Bergk's correction, patroni tit ergo, "that for its patron's sake," is ingenious and gives additional point, but it is not necessary. 11. perenne, " through the years "; or perhaps "unaging," an intentional surprise after plus uno. Poetry. Translated from the Latin by Ryan Gallagher: a bluesy, contemporary, fun and salacious version of this ancient lyric poet--it is blues from ancient Rome. Latin and essays included. "Gaius Valerius Catullus is distinguished from all the other writers of antiquity by his vulnerability. He is the most personal of Latin poets, and more personal than any Greek poet including Sappho....if his love poems could only be duplicated in English they would be popular at every level of society and might be sung in night clubs or by rock groups"--Kenneth Rexroth. "I pothered but/ you'll have bothered/ Catullus played Bach"--Louis Zukofsky.

English summary: Poetry seeks though musical harmony to recreate the time before the gods left humans and denied them their presence. Catullus was the grand priest of this melancholic and exalting amnesia. The unity of Catullus's work lies in his opposing the monstrosities of reality with the luminous memories of the ideal.

Born to a prominent family in Verona, Gaius Valerius Catullus was one the most famous poets of the late Roman Republic. Catullus' poetry is characterized by its association to the 1st century B.C. avant-garde movement, Neoterics, which turned away from the classical Homeric style. Instead of focusing on the epic feats of gods and heroes, the Neoterics wrote poems on a much smaller scale, emphasizing a playful and elegant use of language to express complex allusions to and parodies of contemporary subjects. Arguably the most important of the Neoterics, Catullus composed poems regarding such notable figures as Cicero, Caesar, and Pompey. Amongst his most highly-regarded compositions are those regarding his deep love for a women referred to as "Lesbia", commonly identified as the sophisticated patrician Clodia Metelli. Collected together here are the 116 extant poems which have been attributed to Catullus. This edition follows the translations of Robinson Ellis.
