A bold and unpredictable debut thriller set in the biotech world (and deceptive beauty) of Switzerland, by acclaimed actor Richard Armitage. Nobel Prize-winning scientist Sarah Collier has taken a step back from work to spend more time with her family. Movie nights with her husband Daniel and their daughter Maddie are a welcome respite from the scrutiny of the world’s press. As much as it hurts, it’s good to be able to see her father more too. He’s suffering from Alzheimer’s and needs special care. Sarah has started to show tell-tale signs of the disease too. She’s been experiencing blackouts and memory loss. It’s early days but she must face the possibility that she won’t be there to see her daughter grow up. Daniel, a neuroscientist himself, is doing his best to be supportive but she already knows that she will have to be the strong one. For all of them. So when Sarah is invited to be the guest of honour at a prestigious biotech conference in Geneva she declines, wanting to stay out of the public eye—that is until Daniel shows her the kind of work that the enigmatic Mauritz Schiller has been developing. Flown first class to the spectacular alpine city and housed in a luxury hotel, Sarah and Daniel are thrust back into the spotlight. As they try to shut out the noise of the public media storm, in private Sarah is struggling with her escalating symptoms. And the true extent of what Schiller has achieved is a revelation. This is technology that could change medicine forever. More than that, it could save Sarah’s life. But technology so valuable attracts all kinds of interest. Wealthy investors are circling, controversial blogger Terri Landau is all over the story, and someone close to Schiller seems bent on taking advantage of the situation for themselves. Sarah feels threatened and does not know who to trust—including herself. Far from being her lifeline Schiller's technology may be her undoing. As events spiral out of control, Sarah and Daniel are faced with the ultimate question: how far would you go for someone you love?… (meer)

Scary in a couple of ways - the overt thriller and what Daniel is hiding about his real motive for wanting to go to the Shiller thing. And also dementia & Alzheimers. Having been through it somewhat with my FIL, I DREAD doing it again with my parents or with me and/or my husband. It's awful on so many levels.

Now with more facts revealed like D's affair with H, things are amping up. How much of S's increasing symptoms are real and how much are induced by him and/or Helen? S's initial diagnosis could also be a fake, something that D can use to not only get her to endorse NeuroCell, but to gain power over her entire life if he can get her declared incompetent. Starting with the pilfered passport, he could easily do this because she's had a few public incidents of memory lapses, lost time and headaches/vomiting. Follow the money. and it's a more amped version of Gaslight, which I recently watched for the first time. This plot is more complex and involves other players who could be in on it or mere pawns.

Speaking of pawns, D can't really believe that Helen is genuine, that she really loves him, can he? He resents S for her brains, success and notoriety, but then he hooks up with someone genuinely ego-maniacal. Really? What a moron.

I found this a gripping read and my copy has been signed by the author. I also listened to it on audible and found it more exciting with Richard and Nicola ( both good actors) reading the text.

Nobel prize winning scientist Sarah Collier has just been diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's. Her husband is keen that she endorses a new medical discovery with lots of potential so she comes to Geneva for the launch. However not is all that it seems and Sarah is caught up in events that she cannot foresee and cannot control.
There is a lot to like about this book. The premise is solid with a futuristic science aspect and the key elements for a decent thriller are there, betrayal, trust, money, foreign powers etc. I just found it a little too predictable and clunky at times. ( )

Actor Richard Armitage’s debut novel, a thriller. Originally commissioned as an audio book, he reads a lot of books for Audible, which was subsequently translated to the page.

How original it is I can’t say as I don’t actually read a lot of thrillers, but it kept me turning the page. Recent Nobel winner Sarah has been invited to be the face of a new scientific discovery, but is all what it seems? The concept is current, but I think it missed out on spending some time exploring the moral questions, there was an opportunity but it was missed.

I often find that actors make pretty good storytellers, they can be good on place and character. Armitage does a pretty good job, and the second novel is underway. ( )

For his debut novel Richard Armitage takes as his inspiration Sarah Gilbert, the scientist who co-developed one of the first covid vaccines available for use in the UK. His creation is Sarah Collier, a Nobel prize-winner, who is showing early signs of the Alzheimer's that is already advanced in her father. Sarah is asked to endorse a technological advancement that could save lives, maybe even her own and so she travels to the conference at the Schiller Institute in Geneva with her husband, Daniel.

The story is told from the points of view of Sarah and Daniel. Sarah is becoming increasingly confused and Daniel is her rock. What would she do without him? There are also blog posts from a blogger called Terri Landau who specialises in exposing the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries.

Geneva is a fairly fast-paced intelligent thriller with a fascinatingly unreliable narrator in Sarah. Her story is distressing as she struggles with focus and knowing what is real. What's really interesting in this book is that no character is what they seem and it kept me guessing all the way through. Armitage pulls off some rather clever plot twists!

I enjoyed Geneva. I felt it had a cinematic feel to it (no surprise given the writer's background) and I suspect it will translate very well to the screen should that happen. Sarah's circumstances are told sympathetically, the villains are dastardly and the setting is icy and frosty which is perfect for a suspense-filled novel like this. An accomplished and well-written literary thriller debut. ( )
