Probably the most important collection of Cherokee cultural material ever published, this book combines two detailed reports by ethnographer James Mooney of the Smithsonian Institution's Bureau of American Ethnology. Much of the material, including myths, historical traditions, and medicine songs, is translated from manuscripts written in the Cherokee language by elders.

The historical sketch in "Myths of the Cherokees" is interesting; it reads as if compiled from the work of two different authors, one far more sympathetic to the Cherokees than the other.
