Another triumph for Everyman Pocket Books and English Heritage. Anyone who loves England and the English Canals will love this book - and it makes a delightful little gift. The many excellent colour photographs make this book rather like a collection of high quality postcards.

This is an excellent little Pocket Book (although one would need a fairly big pocket!). Profusely illustrated with high quality colour photographs, their quality is like the best of seaside postcards. A lovely memento for anyone who visits the coast of England or who knows the coast when seen from the sea.

A little gem of a book - profusely illustrated with excellent colour photographs, this is an album of England depicted through signs and lettering. A lovely memento.

It's a pity that my second-hand copy is ruined by a large red sticker on the cover - ONLY £2 it states.

Nevertheless, some of the captions to these lovely photographs are gems in themselves. That on page 26 made me LOL - so spoiler alert necessary - "... The factory does what it says on the wall, but it could equally be the life story of an overalled Brummie in the machine shop." Brilliant!

The author writes well and has a lovely eye for detail. I am really very pleased with this little memento of an England past, so pleased that I am returning the copy with the cover defaced by a sticker that cannot be removed without leaving a gooey mess and I've ordered what I hope is a better copy!

One mistake, that for the photograph on page 48 - it's almost certainly a detail from a London Transport GS 26-seater single-decker bus, but the caption is not entirely correct; CM 26 indicates the bus garage and the running number from that garage (it could hardly indicate the direction of its route, as it would have to be changed every time the bus reached a terminus!

I love little books like this and this is a lovely little book! Colourful photographic gems on every page are like postcards from the seaside - and not a saucy postcard in sight. The text is a paean to the English Seaside (and the Welsh Seaside too). It makes an ideal gift.
