I have to admit that I only collected and read these because I'm a fan of Benedict Cumberbatch. While I loved the first Star Trek reboot film and loved what Cumberbatch did with the Khan character in the sequel, it was a little cheap of Abrams to use the character and story line in that way, basically throwing out what ST fans already knew and loved just to make a blockbuster.

With that said, these comics don't really answer a lot of the questions fans had but it tries. The best part of this series is the beautiful cover artwork by Paul Shipper. The inner art and story lines leave a bit to be desired.… (meer)

So is this universe like, Darkest Timeline, or what? Well, maybe not THE darkest timeline, as that is the mirror universe, but maybe... second to darkest timeline? Timeline of penultimate darkness? Because that would be AWESOME.

OMG the Federation is like evil in the first story based on Return of the Archons. Like, having a mad scientist control some sort of medieval society by the washing of brains was the Federation's experiment all along! Woah! That's dark!

And then the tribbles episode which is like, yeah! tribbles! but not much else.… (meer)

I'm a big sci-fi and Star Trek fan, so of course I had to pick up my review copy of this book from net galley.

It's a very, very fast read - it took me all of ten minutes, which is disappointing to say the least. I also didn't realize it was a comic, because no where on the netgalley page did it say it was a comic. I don't really read comics, and I believe this is the second comic I've ever reviewed.

The artwork is pretty good - the storyline comes from the new ST alternative storyline, not canon. It's a little slow paced for my tastes.

I'd recommend to Trekkies, but that's about it.… (meer)

Instead of mashing up old episodes into this new universe, this goes over some of the histories - Scotty, Uhura, Chekov, Sulu and McCoy - and this is really nice because it's all unexpected - or at least less expected than something I've mostly seen before.

That being said, I'm enjoying getting to know these characters in their own setting right now, with their own stories to tell. And I think some of the things that annoyed me about the new movie - it being a traditional action movie instead of something that made me think - feels more present here. I'm not sure if it's how I approach comics in general rather than movies lately, but regardless of the reason, I like these comics more than I like the movies right now.… (meer)
