Philippe Doumenc (1934–2023)

I got this because I'm a sucker for "investigative fiction" (though usually of the visual variety). Plus I'd read _Madame Bovary_, plus there was a positive review in the Italian newspaper La repubblica. At first, I didn't really like it: the style is uninteresting; unrealistic details like the fact that the young policeman investigating Emma's death later becomes friends with Degas. Right from the start, I felt something was off: the author cites Flaubert himself in a letter to Georges Sand, saying, essentially, that Emma could not have done anything but kill herself; any other reading shows a misunderstanding of her character (so imagine the chutzpah of this guy, I thought!)
By the end, however, I realized that Doumenc was playing a Calvino-esque game (or perhaps Pessoan? See http://www.literarytranslation.com/workshops/pessoa/). A story is real and made-up. Stories can be re-told, re-configured, translated, falsified, forged, and it's all really the same thing.

Doumenc postule que Flaubert s'est trompé dans son diagnostic de suicide : Emma Bovary a été assassinée. Il retrace avec habilité et dans un style classique les dernières heures d'Emma, ses relations avec les habitants du village et commence à en tirer des conclusions accusatrices. On retrouve l'essence du roman original mais son côté plus sordide aussi. Flaubert fait même une apparition à l'enterrement d'Emma! Dommage ainsi que la fin se précipite, le style se casse et des explications lapidaires et sans grand intérêt sont présentées en exposé pour faire état de la vie de tous les personnages. Doumenc aurait mieux d'en terminer sur l'enquête et de discuter du reste dans sa postface où il aurait pu concilier roman et réalité.… (meer)
