A pictorial history of the Los Angeles Police Department from its founding in 1850 to 2005 showing the everyday work of the police officers on the street, the detective investigations, and dignitaries visiting the city. Then there’s the uniqueness that the department earns, thanks to Hollywood, Jack Webb, “Dragnet,” “Adam-12,” and “T.J. Hooker.”

A pictorial display shows the badges through the years; there’s a page dedicated to the infamous Black Dahlia murder, another to kidnapping of two officers [and the subsequent murder of one] as retold in Joseph Wambaugh’s “The Onion Field,” a third to Charles Manson’s “helter skelter” and the murder of actress Sharon Tate. Separate sections look at various periods of the department: The Wild West: 1890-1900; Pride of the State: 1900-1920; Three Decades of Tumult: 1920-1950; Professionalism and a New Tradition: 1950-1970; Defending the Tradition: 1970-1990; and Badge of Honor: The LAPD Experience: 1990-2005.

With many rare and never-before-published photographs, this book provides the reader with a rare and unique look at one of the most advanced and professional police departments in the nation.

Highly recommended for readers with an interest in police department history or in the Los Angeles Police Department itself.
