Daniel tells everyone he isn't afraid of anything. He acts like he is afraid of dogs, but when his little sister makes fun of him he tells her he just doesn't like dogs. When he comes home from school one day his aunt's dog is there, and his family will be watching the dog for a little bit. He hides in his room all day until he needs to go to the bathroom at night. He runs to the bathroom and when he gets inside, the dog Bandit is hiding in there. Daniel is afraid of Bandit and jumps in the bathtub to hide, but then realized Bandit is trying to get to him because the dog is afraid of the thunderstorm outside. He begins to pet and then hold the dog, and then tells Bandit he can sleep in Daniel's bed for the night, and decides that he does like dogs after all.

This book is great for text connections. There are opportunities to broach the subject of fears or the absence of fears. many children and even adults can relate with a boy who is "afraid" of what he doesn't know. He didn't like dogs because he didn't know anything about them and had no experience with them. I would read this book in a Kindergartner classroom.

I used this book for text connections. This book is a story that children can relate to as it talks about a boy who "isn't afraid of dogs." The illustrations can promote conversations among the group about feelings they have had or about what they think the child in the book is having. I would read this book to a kindergarten or first grade class.

This lovely book follows a child through his fear of dogs but keeps denying it until he is faced with a situation where he has to be brave and hold a dog. He overcomes his fear and shows children that it's okay to be scared and you can always overcome it if you try. Makes for good personality development.

This story is adorable! It's about a little boy who is afraid of dogs, but during a thunderstorm sees that the family dog is scared so he comforts the dog and realizes that he is not longer afraid. Would be a great read for a preschool class.

The book depicts a story of a boy who is scared of dogs, but is forced to overcome his fear when his mother agrees to look after one. I was first left feeling dissatisfied after having read the book because the author had not provided the reason for why Daniel, the main character, was afraid of dogs. I then learned to appreciate the story as I realized the author’s intention to reach a wide variety of readers. Not Afraid of Dogs by Susanna Pitzer encourages children to face their fears and overcome them by portraying a story of how a boy completed a similar mission. However, it left me questioning its effectiveness in doing so, which is why I would rate this a mediocre read. Despite all of this, I did appreciate the illustrations; I felt that the illustrations and text went hand-in-hand in delivering the story, especially on the cover page.
