David Edward Scherman (1916–1997)

I picked up two copies of this book, just because of it's venerable age. Once I looked inside, I find I can release it back into the wild. It is only mildly interesting, with fairly boring black & white photos.

The two spreads that interested me the most are the remains of [The Thirty-Nine Steps] and Burrington Gorge, which inspired the hymn 'Rock of Ages.' That rock formation is very cool.

Black and white photos, mostly of people, mostly well-known. Gives a sense of the life and times mostly in the U.S., from 1936-1972.

This book includes photos from the throughout England of literary locations that inspired scenes in classic literature. Each one includes a quote from the text, the photo and a brief explanation of where the location is and why it was used. The information is a bit dated, but it's still interesting.

I would place a bet that 3/4 of the people who own this book got it free as part of their introductory package to the Quality Paperback Book Club. It is filled with iconic images and at least one that will haunt you forever.
