In which is narrated the manoeuvreing which led to the emergence of a second major baseball league at the dawn of the last century, together with a timeline fueled narrative of the highlights of the league's on field action during 1901. The author writes well, and the book is pretty well edited, though a few mangled names and eccentric mathematics do creep in. I can't imagine that many general readers would find the book particularly interesting, but it's a solid choice for fans of baseball's deadball era..… (meer)

If you love baseball, history or statistics, this book is for you!

Incredibly researched and documented, with many pictures from the author's own collection.

Games are separated into several categories, opening day, no hitters, post season and others. Also included are reports from the Negro Leagues and Japan!

Always a concern for me is that in a book of this complexity and detail that reading it takes on an almost academic tone causing the reader to feel the need to be 'on their toes' at all times lest they lose track of things and need to break the mesmerizing spell the tale brings to bear.

The information comes from all eras of baseballs history. From the 1870's to the present day. Dead ball, the development of pitchers and their strategic use, WWII, years of the pitcher (1968 & 2010), the great sluggers and more on to the present day.
Cap Anson, Cy Young, Tom Seaver, Bob Gibson, Luis Tiant, Christy Matthewson, Walter Johnson, Harvey Haddix, Nolan Ryan and all the way through Mariano Rivera are included in the scope of this volume.

If you are a baseball fan or someone with an interest in baseball history, or a casual reader, you will find yourself looking forward to each area with great excitement.

Being an account of the White Sox' last world championship of the century. Books like this tend to bog down in descriptions of individual games; this one doesn't, but that factor is well-represented by the constant intrusion of box scores and statistical irrelevancies which are easy enough to skip but nonetheless disrupt narrative flow. The authors are somewhat plodding storytellers anyway, so it's a praiseworthy production for anyone who can't get enough Sox, particularly old Sox, but of little interest to the general reader.… (meer)
