I'm a neurosurgeon, author, educator and public speaker. I have retired from clinical neurosurgery but still teach undergraduates, medical students, and other learners of all levels. I have authored three books on burnout and a recent novel entitled Death's Pale Flag and write blogs for Psychology Today Online. I routinely give talks on a number of subjects including neuroscience, clinical neuroscience, healthcare, socioeconomics of medicine, medical ethics, humanism, death and dying, breaking bad news, malpractice and medicine, kindness, science and spirituality, burnout, resilience, wellness, general health, exercise, sports, and more. I am an avid but mediocre guitar and banjo player and will soon be teaching myself the banjo! I live in Black Mountain, North Carolina with my wife Cindy and my Border Collie, Hamish.
