Last I read this book was about 5-6 years ago, so around 2006-07.
It was either a YA or Teen book since I found it in my school's library.
And it was a fantasy novel in which the setting was some-what medieval. (carriages, paved streets, tunics were in fashion, and 'healing' was the main mode of treating illness)

The plot was of a young girl in her early teens who is auditioning for a spot to be accepted into the Royal Dance/Ballet Academy. It was the last year she would be able to do so because there was an age limit. She was accepted and skipped a level, so that she was in a class with other young women her age and similar skill. Each level is denoted by a gem, with Diamond being the highest.

The girl makes a rival at the dance school, and there's a whole scenario where they worked together to create a dance as an offering to a goddess who was born from the sea. The rival preforms the dance naked, stating that it was all her own work.

Throughout the story the girl comes to face a conflict between her two skills, dancing and healing. She is skilled in both, but finds dancing more exciting, whereas healing seemed boring and dull. However, her healing skills come in handy when she and the rival compete doing pirouettes (I think) on a precarious spot on the roof of the school. The rival girl falls, and cuts her leg pretty badly, but the main character tends to her until professional help comes.

At the end of the book the girl realizes that healing is her calling, not ballet, and decides to become one.

There's also a bit of a love interest mixed in between her and a guy in town, but I don't think it led to anything.

Any suggestions are welcome! Please and Thank You!

This is Aria of the sea by Dia Calhoun. It is unusual to have ballet in a fantasy setting, which is why I remembered it.
