Hello,

I don't remember the name of a fantasy book I read some time ago. It was the first volume of a serie, but it may have been the first of a new cycle in a series. From my fragmented memory here is what I remember:

the setting is somewhat similar to the song of ice and fire series, in the sense that you follow several characters and the ""main point of view"" is a family living in a snowy land in a huge castle built on hot springs or something with steam in the walls to keep it hot.

the story mainly dealt with the transmission of a sort of spirit (a dragon) inherited in the family. It takes the body and induces changes in personnality, physical transformation (deformation of the face, claws, eyes, etc..). It supposedly gives great powers but also affects the owner.

I also remember that another character is a descendant of a clan that has a sort of shamanistic relationship with owls.

I remember a strange psychic little girl talking to the dragon spirits (and ////spoiler//// that at the end the spit of the dragon escape the weak boy's body and search for a new host, that the girl nearly begs it to take over her body, but that it finds her too sick and small and takes over another character who wakes up in the sea from a shipwreck or something ////)

well that's pretty much all I can say without risking giving false lead (I may already have and what other memory I have from the book are all pretty shady).

A huge thanks to anyone that can help me, it's been bugging me for a while.

cya

This sounds like Lord of snow and shadows, the first book of Sarah Ash's Tears of Artamon series.

Hot damn! that's exactly it. thank you for finding it so quickly.

I borrowed it from my ex-girlfriend a long time ago and find it a pleasant and accessible read. I was thinking of gifting it to a friend for her birthday as she already "like fantasy" but wouldn't go for overly long or complicated series.

thank you again!
