No Loebing for me lately - I'm hip-deep in Book Fair preparations for Charlie's school. Soon, maybe?

>1 tungsten_peerts: Greetings, and nice to see another member here. I seem to have gone dormant, but it's not because I haven't been reading — au contraire! Just not Loeb editions. That's one of the reasons I more or less disappeared from this group. At the end of 2014 I read Plato's Republic in the Oxford World's Classics edition and The Landmark Thucydides, both with extensive supplementary materials — intros, notes, etc. — which made for a wonderful reading experience. Even though both exist in Loeb editions, I find myself gravitating to more informative texts, especially since I am not a student of the Greek language. Right now I am working my way through Plato's Gorgias, to be followed by the Symposium, again, not in Loeb.

Bottom line, I am an interloper in this group. I love the idea of the Loeb editions, but when it comes down to actual reading, I want more than Loeb offers.

Well, my mistake! Didn't realize you had changed your name, Tungsten! ;-)

Yep, Loebs are lovely - and so little and adorable! - but they're usefulness is kind of geared to a fairly specific demographic, honestly: mostly those of us who are classicists and want to read through something quickly (i.e. in English), but with easy access to the original for those phrases when we want to know what the author *really* said and can then just glance across the page. *grins* I do love them, though. So cute! Ha!

Tungsten Peerts is sort of my alter-ego. I had a Facebook account under his name for a time, then (for the final time) tired of Facebook and deleted it.

I'm just using the name here, not ... erm ... 'being Peerts.' Suffice to say if I did do that, y'all would run away. :^)
