Hello Old Friends and Welcome New Ones!

About me: I'm in the process of re-locating from Dallas to the New York metro area and very much look forward to being more settled soon! I live with my husband and two cats and a dog. The cats are his; the dog is ours. He (the dog, not the husband) is a black lab mix named Louis and may just be The World's Best Dog. I work in association management, currently at a membership association for engineers and other professionals in the upstream energy industry. In my spare time, I enjoy traveling (my job usually takes me to interesting places!), snark, participating in shenanigans, and drinking wine. I have over 3000 unread books on my shelves and Kindle and a very understanding husband.

I have been a 75er since 2011. This year, I plan to participate in the American Author Challenge and the Nonfiction Challenge, as well as a few of the challenges in the Category Challenge group, where I will also be maintaining a thread. A few of my goals for the year are to read more of the Pulitzer winners on my shelves, to read more global lit, and to be more selective in my reading - both in what I pick up and in giving myself permission to put things back down if they are not engaging me.

Ratings: I've stolen my star scale from Ellen and slightly modified it.

5 stars = I connected with this book in a special way. It may not be perfect, but it was perfect for me.
4.5 = A great read, among my favorites of the year.
4 = A good read and one that I recommend; truly enjoyable and/or worthy.
3.5 = Pretty good, with a few things done very well.
3 = Good for what it is.
2.5 = Average, and life is too short to read average works.
2 = A bit below average. A waste of time.

Anything worse I probably didn't finish and so wouldn't get a rating.

Monthly priorities (in order):

1) 100 pages in the Penguin History of the World
2) American Author Challenge
3) Nonfiction Challenge
4) GeoCAT Challenge

This is a reminder to myself so that I don't become overwhelmed with various group reads, challenges, monthly themes, etc.

Happy New Thread, Katie! I can't believe I am first!

This is your final week, right? When do you fly out?

How is The Maytrees coming? I sure hope it works better for you, than it did me. I think I will stick with her NF.

>8 msf59: - Hiya, Mark! My first visitor :)

I am driving up north, and I leave on Sunday. Can't wait to get going!

The Maytrees is good. I'm really loving the Cape Cod angle because I am familiar with the area, and she writes about it beautifully. I'm only 40 or so pages into it.

>9 charl08: - Charlotte, I have to say I am pretty excited for actual cold weather and snow! I know I will tire of it, but I can't wait for the first good snow fall :)

Moving is going great - almost done! The buyer did a final walk-through of the house and was happy, so I don't have anything more to do to get it cleaned up, and the closing (is that what it's called in the UK? Where the papers are signed, and keys given, etc.) is tomorrow morning.

All our stuff was delivered to the rental yesterday, so I will soon be reunited with my books! Hooray!

Fun! I am doing something similar on a spreadsheet. I am thinking of trying for a "Sweep" in the TIOLI challenge for December - where I read something for all 15 categories. I rarely read that many works, but I will have several audios done thanks to the drive to New Jersey, and I am including some novellas, so maybe.... It's a fun process just finding books to fit each category :)

Gremlins, my... elbow.

I have bought SO MANY Kindle books lately. They've had some great sales. And The Wayne keeps reminding me that the house proceeds should be saved for when we want to buy a new house. He's so boring. But really, I will need to get some furniture and other things for the rental, so I won't splurge until then :)

78katiekrug

>77 jnwelch: - Yeah, but to be fair, so do women.

It's a funny image, but if it were reversed and it was women doing something stupid and captioned as such, there would be all sorts of outrage. I don't buy into the whole infantalization (is that a word?) of an entire gender. It just sets up an "us" vs "them" mentality that I don't think is useful.

Sorry for the mini-rant. This is a bit of a pet peeve. You should hear me rage against the phrase "Happy wife, happy life." :-)

79jnwelch
dec 2, 2016, 12:00 pm

>78 katiekrug: Good point. For me, it fits my manly outlook of, "let's dive in, this'll be just fine". If you put women in this one instead of men, and said, "This is why men live longer than women", I suspect people would go "Huh?", because we don't expect women to be stupid in this way.

Oh gosh, please speak to my wife about "Happy wife, happy life". She sees those as words I should live by, and I have to admit, it's simple enough for me to remember.

80katiekrug
dec 2, 2016, 1:01 pm

Nopenopenopitynope. I LOATHE "happy wife, happy life." Why should it all be about me? If marriage is a partnership, then happiness is based on finding common ground and compromise, not on one person always getting what they want. And the implication that if I'm not happy, my husband should be equally unhappy is just ridiculous, as is the idea that he can only be happy if I am. GAH!

81jnwelch
dec 2, 2016, 1:07 pm

Jeez Louise, Katie. "Why should it all be about me"?! Are you crazy? "Happy hubby, open the bubbly". I try to always make it all about me. Are we living on the same planet?

:D

83rosalita
dec 2, 2016, 1:29 pm

I also loathe "happy wife, happy life" but mostly (since I am not a wife happy or otherwise) because it implies that all women are completely selfish and only care about themselves. That is so counter to what I observe among the wives in my circle of friends as to be laughable. Of course, there are women who are just that selfish and more so, but that just makes them assholes, not exemplars of their gender.

>82 katiekrug: Ha! Thank you for having your wonderful sense of humor, Katie. Your battle against gender stereotypes is admirable, and you make lots of important points.

"Happy life, happy wife" is a joke between Madame MBH and me because (this will shock you!) she often finds me incredibly annoying, and incorrigible.

I like "Happy spouse, you're not a louse." "Happy significant other, but I can't stand your mother"? No, that's not right. "Happy SO, you won't get let go"?

86katiekrug

>84 ursula: - I like that one, Ursula!

>85 jnwelch: - I find my spouse annoying and incorrigible at times, too, but I'm sure he could say the same for me. That's all I'm trying to say. No one is perfect, so no one deserves all the consideration in a relationship.

Ok, I'll let it go now.

I need to pick up drinks for a party I am co-hosting tonight, as well as put together some kind of cheese tray with the usual accompaniments; I want to try to find some time to buy something to wear to said party because I am so tired of the clothes I've been wearing for the past month (most of my clothes were packed and moved...); I'm skipping my cousin's graduation ceremony for his MBA but I need to put in an appearance at the lunch afterwards; and I have to be at my friends house who is also co-hosting this party to help set up around 3:00 this afternoon. Throw into that a potential work crisis which is not exactly my problem but affects me, the need to do a load of laundry, and the fact that it is cold and raining, and this is NOT going to be my favorite day ever. But tomorrow I leave to re-join The Wayne, so there is that to look forward to :)

Have a great day, everybody!

>89 charl08: - The cheese was great, Charlotte. Let's see if I remember what I picked up.... garlic and herb goat cheese, brie, peppercorn raclette, manchego, smoked gouda, habanero and jalapeno cheddar, apple smoked cheddar, fontina, and I think there was one more. We also had some tasty hot hors doeuvred and LOTS of wine. Good times!

dec 12, 2016, 4:41 pm

Hi, Katie! Glad you're ensconced in NJ before the snow hits.

Unpacking can take such a long time. But at least you've already gone through everything once! Having stayed put for 40 some odd years, I don't have that advantage, and found so much in the back of the closet today - shredded a lot of it. Feeling a little twing-y about some - cards from old boyfriends, and so forth. But really, how long can one keep those things?

I applaud your intention to cull the books. One of the items in that closet was an entire carton of theater books! I'm going to have to cull them and find places for the ones that make the cut.

Good luck setting up the new place. And do let me know when you are ready to play. I'll be happy to introduce you to a few friends of mine, here and in NJ.

188katiekrug

Hi Judy!

I wish we had had more time to purge before we packed. As it is, we moved a bunch of stuff we really don't need and which is now just taking up space. Sigh.

I will definitely let you know when I am ready to "play" :) I can promise it won't be before the new year, though!

Big ol' backlog of books to comment on, so let's see how pithy I can be...

The Book of Aron by Jim Shepard

One child's experience in the Warsaw Ghetto and learning the compromises of survival. Very good.

4 stars

Reunion in Death by J.D. Robb

One of my favorite series and this was one of the stronger entries. My comfort reading.

4 stars

Why Not Me? by Mindy Kaling

A fun audio for a car ride - in the same vein as her earlier memoir/essay collection. She is fresh and funny, if not particularly profound.

3.5 stars

The Maytrees by Annie Dillard

Beautifully written but lacking much warmth. I found parts of it rather inscrutable and bordering on dull, but then I'd be rocked by a gorgeous passage.

3 stars

The Book of Aron interests me. Adding it to the wish list.

Sorry about how overwhelming the move and especially the unpacking and organizing is at this point in time.

I remember after our furniture had been delivered at our new house in Seattle. Life was totally overwhelming. We walked to the Italian restaurant about 7 blocks from our house, ordered a bottle of red and some comfort food (read: pasta dishes) and looked at one another as if to say WTF have we just done?!?! It has turned out alright but at that moment I think we were both wondering if we had just made a huge mistake.

That restaurant has major positive vibes for us to this day. :-)

Speaking of wine, I just opened a 2005 Bordeaux. It needs to open up a bit but this definitely falls in the realm of comfort!

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

Do yourselves a favor and if you see these at the supermarket, pick up a package or 10. So delicious! They were handing out packages in Herald Square as part of a promotion; conveniently, The Wayne walks right by there on his way to the train in the evening :)

ETA: I know the more talented among us (Hi Amber!) can bake their own cookies, but for the rest of us poor slobs, these are delightful!

Ooh, cinnamon. Sounds lovely. Hope the unpacking is progressing. I feel like I should have a clearout, but I'd rather not, all things being equal. But I should...!

So my unpacking muddle basically comes down to this:

I have nowhere to put anything in the boxes because I can't place the furniture because the boxes are in the way because I can't unpack them because the furniture isn't placed. GAH! I did get two small bookcases situated, so I can unpack a box or two of books onto them. But that's just a mere drop in the bucket! I have to remind myself that baby steps are still steps...

Continuing my 1-2 sentence reviews....

Carsick: John Waters Hitchhikes Across America by John Waters

A weird book that started out with fiction - his imagining the best- and worst-case scenarios, written as two novellas. Then he detailed each ride he actually got as he traveled from Baltimore to San Francisco in his trademark outrageous and sometimes discomfiting brand of humor.

3.5 stars

The Worst Class Trip Ever by Dave Barry

A middle-grade novel about an 8th grade trip to Washington, DC, where the narrator and his friends get caught up in international shenanigans. Mildly funny in parts, but I'm obviously not the target audience!

3 stars

Skating on Thin Ice by Jami Davenport

Picked up primarily to fulfill a TIOLI challenge, and because I have a soft spot for sports-themed romances. This was pretty meh.

2.5 stars

A prequel novella to a romance trilogy set in New York City by an author recommended by Susan (hi Susan!). It was cute and obviously given the length, not super well-developed, but the writing was good, so I am confident I will like her full-length novels.

And I'm caught up!

Currently reading Falling Man which needs attention, so I may have to set it aside the rest of this week and find something lighter. And I'm still listening to Mrs. Queen Takes the Train which continues to be charming - I just don't have a lot of listening time at the moment (only the 10-15 minute drive to the train in the morning)...

ETA: And I'm under 50 pages away from completing The Penguin History of the World, my year-long project!

When the un-packing gets really bad, just imagine you're me and you've been moving since September and you haven't found a place to live yet and therefore can't even bring boxes anywhere to unpack...

Our latest issue was negotiating a foray into our storage to get winter coats and other miscellaneous but necessary stuff. The storage company was being really awful and there was a long string of emails between their manager and my husband about finding a time and that we would have to pay $350 for the privilege. They basically ended up saying we could come between 1 and 5 on a weekday. It's an hour away, and my kids get home from school between 3 and 4. Not gonna work. So, I got the phone number and called the manager and went full Scarlet O'Hara on him, basically talking and talking and talking about all the difficulties with coming between 1 and 5 and how my poor kids were going to freeze without their coats and did they have a place for my kids to be while we went through the boxes because I was going to have to get them out of school early and bring them and my husband would have to take off work and we have to rent a truck.... And I didn't let him talk at all for at least 5 minutes. My 10 year old was watching this performance with a "who are you, woman?" expression on his face. Finally, the guy got up a shout over me and said "Ma'am, just tell me when you want to come, and I will make it work." I told him 11 am tomorrow would be great, thanks ever so much! And got off the phone. I probably shouldn't make a habit of it, but man it was effective. *grin*

Good luck unpacking, Katie. I'd volunteer to help with the books...

Another good thing about the move; you no longer live in a place where people cheer for the Cowboys. ;)

Hi Katie, sounds like those cookies are the perfect aide to your unpacking! The picture of you in your new place surrounded by boxes and books, munching on cookies and sipping on tea, makes me smile.

Welcome back to the mid-Atlantic region, Katie. Good luck with unpacking. I had a job with a moving company for a couple of summers whilst in college, then moved three times with help from family and friends, moved my older son twice, younger son a couple of times, my daughter several times. All that toting of boxes and furniture does get old.

Right now, I'm cataloging books from my "office" and packing them in boxes so I can move EVERYTHING out of said "office" so I can CLEAN it, replace the rug, build more shelves, ditch the desk (even though I did build it myself), bring in a comfy chair, and dub the room my Reading Room Annex # 1. The sooner I get the packing done, the sooner I can start unpacking. Huh? Wait!

Yeah, I guess that's right.

Enjoy yourself.

Oh, and by the way, I'm a two-hour bus ride from Port Authority. I'm meet-up worthy (at least in my own mind) when and if the time comes...

>208 BLBera: - Beth, come on over and help! I even have wine! True about the Cowboys fans, but now The Wayne has to deal with Jets fans. Heh.

>209 DeltaQueen50: - Judy, I actually spend most of my days in my basement office working. But tonight I made dinner and then emptied four whole boxes, so go me! Now I need a cookie :)

>210 weird_O: - Bill, it osunds like that move-out/clean-out will be worth it! I have my eye on the third floor bedroom here as a kind of reading escape... We shall see. The only thing that might prevent it is I'm not sure how I'd get a comfy chair up two flights of steep and narrow stairs!

I hope to join you and Diane and Linda at one of those epic book sales you all frequent :)

Katie, at least you have your office up and running, so you can keep a job over your head. As it were. Go you! And yes to the cookie. And baby steps are still steps. You have lots of other things to do, after all. Find your new supermarket, join the library, explore all the shops that they didn't have in Texas, join the library... Glad you liked the Sarah Morgan :-)

LOL that made me laugh! When we moved to England we had a few British customer service experiences that elicited a similar response. We called it "going American." I wasn't proud of it, but it worked.

I am hoping everything (or mostly everything) will be set up this weekend, though Saturday is a bit of a wash, as we are planning to go into the city to play tourist and see the holiday decorations :) Eventually, I'll have dual monitors, a keyboard tray, and a rollerball mouse which I am looking forward too, as working off this tiny laptop is a pain in the behind!

I've just submitted my online application for the local library; I am hoping to run out around lunch time to show them my proof of address and get my card. Exciting! I've already been trolling their catalogue - both physical and electronic, and I think the collection is pretty good...

Morning, Katie! Look at you making progress! Hoping you figure out how to get a comfy chair up to the third floor. Our Indiana house had the narrowest hallway, and we despaired of getting the larger furniture where it needed to go until we figured out the the windows were huge - we brought everything in through the windows. Ha!
