Can you recommend to me an excellent biography of Peter Tchaikovsky?
I'm not a pro or even a music major, but I'd like to read a treatment that includes some analysis of his compositions, enough to shed some light for an educated layperson. I'm interested in what might be thought of as his principal works, including their background and context how they relate to the work of his contemporaries. What were his innovations? What were his greatest influences?
I've been a classical music listener all my life and consider myself a relatively knowledgeable audience, although not qualified to penetrate anything too technical. The quality of the writing also matters to me.
