My favorite book when I was a child was A tree for Peter written and illustrated by Kate Seredy. Somewhat sappy, but it was written in the 1940's and while times were hard, the story portrays hope and accomplishment. The portrayal of the Irish cop is refreshing!

It would definitely have to be American Gods. I fell in love with it several years ago and I've had a bit of a Neil Gaiman obsession ever since.
How can you go wrong with an ex-con having unexpected encounters with living, semi-mortal, remnants of Gods?

Ohhhh, so many books, so little time. One of my all-time pleasures in reading was Breakfast at Tiffany's by Truman Capote, because it was both fun and heartbreaking ... and Capote didn't compromise Holly Golightly's character - she was true to herself to through the end. (The movie blew it on that part.)
