There was something in the plot about hunting special animals to make items that amplify magical abilities. I think it was set in the Eastern European region. Read it about 3 year ago I think, YA audience.
There was a really cool illistration on the inside of the book, of animal representations of the major world countrys, Russia was a bear, America an Eagle, there were some definite steam-punky looks to it.
It was part of a series, maybe about 300 pages?
They were trying to fight back "darkness" that spawned monsters.
