I believe the setting starts in Los Angeles. She talks about walking around the city and seeing vampires (not a fantasy book, pretty sure the vampires are just goths), and going to a beach. I can't remember if she talks about seafoam at the beach or because her hair was that color.
Towards the middle end, she meets a boy. He laid out roses on the bed and they make love on the roses and the thorns are cutting them.
