Cheli is mountain climbing again!

Hi everyone, this is my 15th annual category challenge.
This year, I've been participating in the Category challenge since 2009 and this year I am going with the same as last year. I'm going with the number of books to read in the categories instead. I made the definition of categories very simple so that I was able concentrate more on the books and less on the way the books fit in categories.

This year my theme is againCLIMBING MOUNT TBR. I did so well last year making a lot of progress on catching up on series that I'd already started that I want to keep going. I'm sure that there are still mountain ranges that I need to climb! The 5 categories have been identified by 4 mountain ranges and a valley will be designated to specific authors, concentrating on the books that are currently sitting on my shelves, both virtual and real as well as on my wishlist for more than a year.

The last few years I have read well over 150 books each year and I would like to keep that going, however, I will be moving in 2023 from my home in Maryland to our retirement home in South Carolina. There is a lot packing and unpacking that will be taking place, so my reading time may be cut drastically. I'm hoping to use audiobooks when my hands and eyes are otherwise occupied, but that may not always be possible. Therefore, I am setting each category to a number of books to be read. And since I will be sticking close to home for the foreseeable future - getting my house in order - I decided that mountain ranges in the USA would be appropriate.

However, that's not all, because I do get some bright shiny new books or borrow from library for Book Club, so again those books should fall into a valley since they aren't part of the mountains. This time, however, I selected the Shenandoah valley because it's close to my new home.

In 2023 I'll be continuing the following formal challenges:

The 75 Book Challenge is where I can chat about my grandchildren, themes for the day or just anything I feel like as well as BOOKS.
US Presidents Challenge So far I'm still working on FDR, I have made it to World War II but think it might take me as long to finish this era as it took the war to be fought. I did make a bit of progress but I still am on the European front so WWII will extend to at least 2024. Being unsure of how long it will take for the Pacific war and 75+ years after, this challenge has been extended to 2028 at least.
European Challenge - I still have 2/3 of Europe to explore. Hopefully, a few foreign countries are in my future this year - at least in books.
Miscellaneous monthly challenges that will help me find new things to stretch my reading include the Alpha Kit. I'll be looking for a new Book Club after I move, so I'm sure there will be books for that too.

Then there are also several personal challenges that I will be endeavoring to work on in 2023.
Bookshelf Bootie - I'm trying to remind myself that when books come into to my house they need to be read soon. My goal is that 50% of new books in are read in the current year. Hopefully, that will include the books that I actually purchased as well as downloaded to my e-reader so that those books that show in my acquisition ticker on my ROOT thread will be read in a timely manner. I did better than ever in 2022 with 60% of new books acquired in 2022 read. YEAH!!! I also purged over 200 books real and virtual in preparation for the move. My wishlist was also cut by over 100 - I just knew I'd never get to them.
ROOT Challenge is my effort to read 84 books (7 per month at least) off my own shelves! (This includes books on my Nook/Kindle, ER & ARCs I receive for review, and audiobooks that I've downloaded in the past.) Even though I've resolved to reduce the number of ARCs/ERs that I request so that more of the old books have priority, I still managed to acquire 85 books in 2022. (actually less than I expected) But I read 154 books and purged nearly 200 reducing my TBRs from 483 adjusted totals for the start of 2022 to 220. Since the 4 categories only account for 84 books, the vast majority of my reading this year should be from my own books! So I'll still be climbing toward the mountaintop this year!

I know that my book acquisitions are out of control... there is no way that I can ever read all the books in my possession in my lifetime, but I will keep trying.

So here we go!

HERE ARE MY CATEGORIES:

Blue Ridge Mountains - 43 (20+23)
Cascade Mountains - 43 (20+23)
Grand Tetons - 23
Catskills - 23
Shenandoah Valley - 20

So my goal is 152 books. Ambitious with everything else in the works, yes, but worth a try.

V. SHENANDOAH VALLEY

Even though I have more than 200 books on Mount TBR, I know that there will be times when I will be reading books that are not part of the mountain ranges - in essence, they will be shiny new books I couldn't resist, library books, book club selections. So if I am not reading from the mountain, I must be in a valley. Close to my new home is the Shenandoah Valley, so that's my "valley" of choice this year.

Here is where those undiscovered and undetermined books will be slated.

I've run into a few snags for the beginning of the year - not only am I preparing to move from Maryland to South Carolina in the spring (downsizing is a B****) but I've spent 22 days in the hospital and had numerous doctor's appointments, needless to say, which have cut into my reading and reviewing time. Today I am making a conscious effort to catch up a bit.

Poppy is extremely surprised when her old rival, Serena Saunders, enlists her aid in checking out her fiancé before getting married again. However, Poppy agrees and the Desert Flowers get involved in murder and mayhem yet again.

It is entertaining to see Poppy juggle her own friends and business while trying to be supportive of a client she doesn't really like.

Challenge Book #3
Handbook for Homicide ★★★
Lorna Barrett
Category - Blue Ridge

Series - Booktown #14
Other Challenges - ROOT Challenge, 75 Book Challenge

Tricia Miles has returned to Stoneham from a vacation she took with her BF Marshall Cambridge (he was working as a tour guide) so she didn't really get to spend a great deal of time with him. It got her thinking about their relationship. Before she has barely settled in, her store manager, Pixie, discovers a body in their dumpster and Tricia sets out to make sure that none of her friends are blamed.

Not really one of the best in the series but I still do love the characters.

A Deadly Deletion ★★★★
Lorna Barrett
Category - Blue Ridge

Series - Booktown #15
Other Challenges - ROOT Challenge, 75 Book Challenge

This Booktown installment follows immediately after the previous book and it is like night and day. Tricia has received two marriage proposals in an afternoon but before she can even consider the first (from Marshall Cambridge( Marshall is run down in the street and dies.

Trying to solve his murder, Tricia uncovers secrets from his past that Marshall kept from her. She is also trying to decide if she wants to be the next Chamber of Commerce president since the last one is no longer around.

So many tangles in the story so that the ending was a complete surprise.

Murder at the Spring Ball ★★★½
Benedict Brown
Category - Blue Ridge
Source - NetGalley
Series - Lord Edgington Investigates #1
Other Challenges - ALPHAKit (I/S), ROOT Challenge, 75 Book Challenge

Lord Edgington has been reclusive ever since the death of his wife many years ago but decides that he is going to revive the Spring Ball but before the event can start, his daughter dies having drunk champagne meant for the entire family. Who was really the intended victim? Why after all this time?

It was a bit confusing at the start with all the characters blending together, but once they all individualized, the story and mystery were entertaining. It's great to see that mysteries can still be written that don't have to have cell phones and computers to make them work.

Spymistress: The True Story of the Greatest Female Secret Agent ★★
William Stevenson
Category - Shenandoah Valley
Source - Public library
Series - N/A
Other Challenges - ALPHAKit (I/S), 75 Book Challenge

Vera Atkins was a spy for the British during World War II. She was apparently quite forgotten in the history books until this attempt to rectify that. However, IMO, this book went into entirely too much detail and needed serious editing. The clarity for an average reader was difficult to manage - too many code names, etc. to keep track of.

I'm certain that Ms. Atkins' efforts during the war were extraordinary, however, IMO, this book was not.

This is the first book in the series that I could not finish. Normally, I love to spend time with Guido Brunetti and the Venetian police as well as his charming wife and family. However, in this book, there was no plot, no goal, I couldn't figure what he was searching for or why. I kept falling asleep.

Hope the next one lives up to the wonderful characters, this one didn't.

So Ro and Val start digging into the victim's life and things are not pretty.

The local ice fishing competition is also on the calendar so when Shiloh goes to check to see how her father is doing on the ice, she discovers the body of the owner of Field's brewing. Since Kristy's husband is a suspect, Shiloh feels the need to find out what happened.

One of his construction workers was buried alive when a retaining wall collapsed. But was it an accident or pre-meditated murder? Could the fact that none of the crew were particularly fond of the victim make Ansel's uncle's concerns valid?

Jazzi spends less time on the construction site because she is pregnant and Ansel and Jerod are two very protective men.

I have to laugh or I'm going to cry. The men came to install my big walk-in tub this morning and neglected to check the drainage before filling the tub to capacity. When they started the tub draining, the water started overflowing in the shower and all over the bathroom, into the master bedroom, and into the hall and master closet. I'm guessing that the house has truly been baptized now.

Apparently when the concrete guys were laying the forms for the slab, they punctured the water pipe and since nothing was going through it, there was no indication that there was a problem. Now that the line is being used fully (bathrooms, washer, kitchen) the problem has strained the hole and gone berserk! At least it wasn't the tub guys! The Toll Brothers manager says that they will cover everything. We may be able to stay while the work is done, just sleep upstairs on the sofa bed. Ah, the joys of Home Ownership!

I was very surprised as I put in the stars to realize that I had some great reads at the end of this year - 2 5★s and 2 4½★s. That's pretty rare for me.

My favorites of course, were the 2 5 stars - The Lantern's Dance (the latest Mary Russell series - loved it!) and Fresh Snow on Bedford Falls - I read it the day after Christmas which was the perfect time, taking up the story from It's a Wonderful Life. If you need a Christmas story, it's terrific.

As for reaching my goals - I didn't do very well.
I wanted to read 152 books and
I barely made it half way.

Real life definitely threw me numerous curveballs - 31 days in the hospital, packing up and moving 700+ miles from MD to SC, unpacking, problems with the new house that had to be addressed, travels back to MD several times, and the pièce de résistance - COVID.

Through all these trials, it was very difficult to concentrate on reading, I can only hope that 2024 is a much simpler and peaceful year.

I would have liked to make it to 125, but even with my surge of children's books before Christmas, I didn't make it. I will hit 121 for certain and possibly 122 or 123. Actually I've thought of one I don't remember being here that I ordered and read, but apparently did not review, so I guess I'll hit 122 for certain and 123 if I finish an audio book on the ride home and 124 if I finish a book (print or e) before then.
