I thought it would be nice to have a Group Wiki to keep track of our assignments and to have our reviews in one place for ease of reading if anybody wants to do that. I've set up a page here and done the first dozen entries. At the moment, the only reviews added are mine. This is not an attempt at self-aggrandisement, I promise, but a pause to consider the issue of copyright.

I'd be grateful to know what everybody thinks and in particular:

1) Would it be fun/useful to have?

2) For anyone else who might want to edit/contribute, do the tips at the top make sense?

2) Copyright!!!! Who has the copyright in the reviews? Do we need each reviewers permission each time, or LT permission, or can we deem that we have permission by virtue of membership of the group, or...

1) Looks fun, may well be useful. You might want to link to it from the main Group page, otherwise I doubt many people will find it.

2) err... I think so, but I don't really know what I'm doing.

2b ...3) Dunno officially, but I'm quite happy for mine to go up. I think it would be good to have the users attributation in the review text box as well, just so its clear that this is a specific person's review.

I'm not sure that where/if people have linked to a more extensive review in their blog whether it would be ok to reproduce the whole thing. A link should certainly be included to the blog.

4) It's going to be huge when it all get's done!

I'll link to the main page once it's done (and once I work out how to edit the main page).

I could start all the reviews with "The result was this review:" That would make like easier for inputting. Do you think that would serve?

If there are links outside LT, I'll certainly keep those links intact.

Yes, it will be big and I may have to split it into pages. At this point, I anticpate it at the very least being divided into the two threads. I will no doubt be giving you or fyrefly a shout when I need to do that to tell me how.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that all the reviews on LT remain the property of the member writing it, so I guess if permissions are needed it would just be the member's permission.

I'm am rather completely computer dense so unfortunately can't really offer much more.

However, if needed you certainly have my permission to re-post any reviews I've done for the group :-)

You do have to have permission to publish reviews there, and with that I mean individual permission of the member in question.

On that note, I like the idea, but I never post a full review on LT, I always post a little bit, and the rating, with a link to my blog if people want to read the entire review. I you don't mind me doing it that way on the wiki, I have no problems with posting my tidbits and the link there. But, I'd rather not post my entire review there.

1) Sure! A wiki can be useful. Plus it would have all the reviews in one place, so it's convenient.

2) They're clear to me. I've never edited wiki pages though so I'm taking a guess.

3) You'd probably need the reviewer's permission because LibraryThing doesn't allow contents of reviews to be copied unless it specifically says so in the user's profile. I have no problems with other people posting my reviews. I put links in my reviews, but you can post the entire review. I always do it that way because partial ones annoy me - personally - and I don't have the confidence that people will go the extra length and click on the link to read more of it. Then I just plug my website link at the bottom for shameless promotion :-)

Edited for spelling.

I have no problem with someone else in the group posting my reviews on the wiki page (consider this permission granted), but I probably won't have the motivation to post them there myself.

I don't mind doing the posting. The thread isn't so active that it will be a heavy responsibility.

Once I've got the pages for the two game thread done, I'll put the link in the top section. At the moment, I am taking comments here as consent to put the reviews in and noting the cases where permission is awaited.

You certainly can have my permission to post my reviews on the wiki. I think this is a really cool idea. Thanks for going to the trouble!

Inigo, you can post my reviews too.

11InigoMontoya
Bewerkt: mei 3, 2008, 10:46 am

Thanks for all the consents. When I've got it up to date, I'll message all those whose consent is needed in the hopes that we can make it as complete as possible.

I started getting loading warnings. I decided to break up the pages into reviews of 25. The first page is done* and on the above link. I've done more on a word document but I've hit an obstacle.

I'm being dumb for not finding it, but does anybody know how to create a second page in Wiki?

*When I say done, I mean done up to the point before a lot of those reveiws were posted. They have yet to be added but I'm working chronologically through the thread.

By the way, are reading_fox and Jensen reading/reviewing demons or what?

You have my permission to post my reviews.
Although I realize that I never actually reviewed one of the books assigned to me. Oops! I'll get to that now that the semester is over. :)

"but does anybody know how to create a second page in Wiki"

I think you just assign it new a name - the current one is called Go_Review_that_book, so the same way you created that, you'd create a _page2.

"reviewing demon"! Ha, well I'm trying to review every book in my library eventually!

Feel free to post my reviews as well.

Okay, the initial job is done. I'm about to add the link to the Group page and contact those whose permission I still need.

When copying over the reviews, I've tried to retain any formatting used (bold, italics, links, etc) but I may have missed some. If you catch any errors and don't want to tackle them on the wiki yourself, just let me know. I've sort of got the hang of it now.

Hello there, you can post my review and any future ones.

I really need to get to Dirk Gently's Detective Agency.

22InigoMontoya
mei 9, 2008, 9:13 am

Thank you.

I really need to get to Dirk Gently's Detective Agency.

Hee. In the course of doing this, I do now have a list of all the reviews outstanding. I don't know if it would be useful to add this as a page to the Wiki. I was a bit worried that it might look like I was pointing fingers at those who hadn't done their reviews, but of course, everyone is on it except the last poster in the Game Thread. It's a simple list of players and the books they are currently assigned. Any interest?

Go for it.

I just checked it out-great work. I love that you have who tagged whom with a book and the table looks great. And I think including outstanding reviews is a good idea. We have ALL gone a long time before getting to a game book, so it's not finger pointing in my mind. It's all just part of the game.

25InigoMontoya

Thanks, Kaeli.

I've done the page. I've called it "Reviews to Come" and put a link to it on the Group page.

You have my permission to post my reviews; past, present, and future. I swear I'm almost done with Pillars of the Earth.

I love the idea of the wiki, but i'm having trouble grasping the Wiki (GRTB) within a Wiki (LT) thing -- especially with the multiple pages. I'm sure it's just me and my unfamiliarity with the whole wiki thing. I'm sure there's a wiki for me to explain it.

8-)

EDIT-- I'm thinking out loud about the copyright issue. Even the most stringent agreement re: reviews says "restrict my reviews to LT" -- and I believe this does that. No?

27InigoMontoya
mei 10, 2008, 9:38 am

Thanks, Ingrid. I'll add them now.

I don't quite understand the Wiki stuff. I wouldn't mind making the pages prettier for a start, but I haven't a clue how. I'd hoped to be able to put the covers in at least but that looks to be a palavar. As for multiple pages, that was brought on by a warning that I had too much for slow browsers as about review #45 - hence doing a 25 book break. Hopefully I've got links on every page for the other pages plus the ones here on the group page, so there shouldn't be too much navigation involved. I don't know how permanent the Wiki will be but for safety's sake, I've got it all on a word document in case it disappears and can worry about that as and when it happens.

Having said that, all those pages are editable by anyone so if anybody wants to change anything, have at it.

BTW you've done a LOT of work and have done a GREAT job putting this together. I should have mentioned that before. Thanks so much InigoMontoya!

(I can NOT say that in my head without ALSO saying "You killed my father. Prepare to die." LOVE IT!)

Hey. Call me Ismail...uh...Inigo. I have found that it's the only way to stop that bit of dialogue running though my head.

Unless, of course, you actually have six fingers on one hand, in which case: PREPARE TO DIE!

Not wishing to force you to make one of the classic blunders, the most famous being never to get involved in a land war in Asia and only slightly less well known is this: never post a Librarything review without the reviewers' permission, please take this as my heartfelt permission to post mine to the wiki when I'm done.

From the game thread from sjmccreary
BTW InigoMontoya, you may post my reviews.

Thanks, smjccreary. And congratulations on being assigned the group's 300th book.

Sorry it's been a while I've been absent for the last 6 months or so... You can use my reviews on wiki.

If we don't finish a book we have been asked to read can we review it anyway and say why it wasn't finished? (In my case it was too boring!)

35reading_fox
jul 28, 2008, 11:00 am

sure - there's been a few reviews of unfinished books. These are probably more helpful than any other - readers then know to stay well away. It's worth detailing why you couldn't finish it though.

I'm jumping in kind of late here, but feel free to add my reviews, too.

If, in order to include reviews on the wiki, you need my permission to include my reviews on the wiki, it's granted. That being said, I still haven't finished or reviewed A long walk to freedom, which was chosen for me.
