All I remember from that book is a brief 'good stuff cheap' vs. 'high-quality merchandise at reasonable prices' discussion to show the difference between German and Latin roots of English words. Please, anyone know the title or the author? Much appreciated.

Robert MacNeil, the journalist, writer and TV news anchor who died just last week, wrote/contributed to several books about language. The Story of English and Wordstruck would be worth looking into.

Coincidentally, I just read Wordstruck a couple of weeks ago. Lovely book, but I don't recall any discussion of German vs. Latin roots. It was more of a memoir than a book about language.

Might be something by Richard Lederer.

Possibly something by Arthur Quiller-Couch, who was an advocate of simple language?

Thank you, everyone, for your suggestions. As far as I remember, the book was authored by a female writer.
