The new Columbia blockgame Richard III has got me interested in the Wars of the Roses. I'm reading The Wars of the Roses: Politics and the Constitution in England, c.1437-1509 by Christine Carpenter, but it's a bit of a dissapointment. Has any of you suggestions for further reading?

I've just started Warwick the Kingmaker by Paul Murray Kendall, also because I bought the boardgame Richard III. And I want to keep up with my usual gaming partner. Can't tell you much about it yet, but a well informed Wars of the Roses mother recommended this book te me.

That's an interesting collection of books on the wars of the Roses, Donogh. I think Lancaster and York: Wars of the Roses is the kind of general overview I'm looking for. Thanks.

Have you played the game yourself?

Haven't played it. Is it a remapping of Hammer of the Scots or are there significant changes?

The basic mechanisms are the same, but the changes in comparison to HotS are significant enough to make it more than just a remapping. The game is more brutal, I think, than its predecessor, less strategic maybe (supply is only a minor worry for example) , and playing time is shorter (+/- 2 hours when played at a reasonable speed).

Goodness, brings back memories of hours of playing KINGMAKER.

Ah Kingmaker was great fun. Richard III is also very good, but it doesn't beat Kingmaker with 4 or 5 people.
